The success of information systems development activities are influenced by technology and human resources. 1. INTRODUCTION Using teams to design, develop, and implement information systems is a necessity and the norm in most business organizations and within the software development industry. Teaching information technology (IT) students tools, techniques, methods, and technologies to develop state-of-the-art systems addresses only one aspect of becoming a successful professional in today's work environment. Developing communication and interpersonal skills and learning how to effectively interact with other professionals is also critical for attaining professional expertise and success. An Empirical Examination of Factors Affecting Group Effectiveness in Information Systems Projects

Although group project concepts and skills have become a major component in most information systems (IS) academic programs, very little research has attempted to examine factors that may improve or undermine effectiveness of IS group projects. Accordingly, based on relevant literatures, this study develops and empirically tests a model of factors affecting IS group project effectiveness. The research model posits that group cohesion and group efficacy will have positive effects on group effectiveness (project success and expected impact), whereas perceived loafing is expected to have a negative effect on IS group effectiveness. Data collected from 104 students working in 29 groups to complete semester-long projects in two IS courses revealed that group efficacy had positive impact on group effectiveness and perceived loafing demonstrated a partial effect. Contrary to expectations, the impact of group cohesion was nonsignificant. These results could be useful in evaluating groups' potential for success and creating conditions conducive to enhancing effectiveness and success of IS student group projects.

Teaching the topics from the field of information system design and development presents a specific challenge for the teacher. It is hard to simulate real-life circumstances of complex information system design and development in educational environment. In this paper we present an educational model in which topics from this field are taught using project-based learning. This method is used continuously during the entire study, through a number of interconnected project assignments. Each assignment presents a phase or activity of information system design or development, and approaches students to real-life problems. We propose to implement this model through several courses in undergraduate and graduate study, because assignments require different levels of maturity and knowledge from students. PROJECT MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTIES: A CASE STUDY OF INFORMATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
It has been revealed that a combination of insufficient and unsuitable project management issues are responsible for this low rate of IS development. This paper presents the findings of the fieldwork and interview conducted on the challenges and difficulties of system development project. The study employed both personal interview and observation methods. The findings revealed that fund, infrastructures (hardware and software), manpower, management commitment, monitoring and inspection were the critical challenges and difficulties faced by organizations during their system development. Therefore, the study concludes that fund, infrastructures (hardware and software), manpower, management commitment, monitoring and inspection play crucial role for an effective system development. Our study recommends that there should be sufficient budget to procure the right system hardware and software for right requirements. Secondly, training of staff for both IS development and management should be given urgent attention.
Experiential learning approaches have been especially effective in information systems courses where 'real-world' scenarios are used to provide a degree of complexity that reflects actual system development projects. Students are shown how the principles of project management can provide a framework for reducing the difficulty and complexity of the development process to a more manageable procedure as they put into practice their knowledge and skills from previous courework in creating working application systems. This paper outlines an experiential approach for teaching the value of information systems project management in the systems development process through the collaborative efforts of the graduate class in Information Technology Project Management, and the undergraduate senior capstone projects course.
Success Factors for an Information Systems Projects Team Creating New Context

This paper aims to investigate the factors that influence cohesion and success of an IS project team. Based on the literature regarding project team success and IS, a complex framework has been adopted in order to develop the research model for the study. Consequently, the research model will incorporate variables increasing the stability and chance of success of the IS project team. The case study and the conclusions are based on the interpretation of the results of a survey and a number of semi-structured interviews with members of an IS project team that were and still are involved in many IS projects at the University of Craiova, between 1999 and 2008. Our research findings show that different approaches to IS project team members dictated by their different specializations (skills and competencies) create a new context of team complexity and team cognition, which might affect IS in different ways.
Systems development group project: A real world experience

The Group Systems Development Project course of the Information Systems major at the University of Cape Town is a practical course designed to integrate the body of knowledge obtained in other undergraduate theoretical courses. The main objective of the course is to give students a real world experience of the diverse and complex nature of the Information Systems profession and provide them with adequate skills for the global marketplace. This paper describes the objectives as well as the deliverables and the administration of the course. The basic course content is outlined, and the various stakeholders and their roles are identified. Some discussion is provided regarding the comprehensive set of assessment strategies that has been implemented as well as a number of critical issues that have emerged. Finally, the need for ongoing research in this area is addressed.
Team Members\u27 Perspectives on Information Systems Development Success

Many information systems development (ISD) projects are deemed a failure in the field. However, several practitioners and researchers argue these projects could actually be considered successful if we used a broader definition of software development project success. Answering the call for further research on what makes ISD projects successful, this paper describes the process used to build the theoretical model of ISD Success, which includes a thorough literature review to create an initial model followed by semi-structured interviews conducted to validate the model and to allow for the discovery of emergent constructs, sub-constructs, and hypotheses. The end result of this research is the theoretical model of ISD success. After subsequent research has established the links from ISD success to IS success, project professionals will be able to use the ISD Success to predict success of an ISD project. Early prediction may allow professionals to head off potentially unsuccessful systems
