Introduction: Menstruation is a physiological phenomenon but often shrouded in silence, myths and taboos and can be stigmatized against young girls in developing countries. The objective of this work is to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practices of young girls aged 8 to 25 in terms of menstrual hygiene management in the city of Butembo in order to identify opportunities and constraints for the implementation of an intervention focused on the promotion of menstrual hygiene in the city of Butembo. Method: This is a cross-sectional and cross-sectional descriptive survey in the school institutions of Butembo, 594 young girls participated under study. Results and discussion: 13.8% of young girls say they do not know what menstruation is about or that it is a pathological phenomenon. 84.20% are informed about menstruation before their menarche. The first information about menstruation is given mainly in a family context and rarely at school. 58.20% have their menarche without knowing what it is; and react with fear or hide. At each cycle, 68.70% of girls who have already had their menarche claim to be embarrassed or worried about the period of menstruation. 70.54% of girls have bans during the period of menstruation. 57.7% no longer use the same type of material as in their menarche because of the cost of the material. 6.76% of girls do not wash their hands after changing protective equipment during menstruation. After using protective equipment during menstruation, 39.9% throw it in the toilet, 27.0% bury it, 18.4% throw it in the household trash and 14.7% burn it. When protective equipment is soiled at school or at the place of service, 44.1% of girls bring it home to dispose of it, 33.3% dispose of it in the toilet. 27.10% of girls claim to make a change in their activities during menstruation; 12.9% of girls think that menstruation has an impact on their personality. Conclusion: the level of knowledge of menstrual hygiene measures is still low in our environment. Measures to improve it would raise the level of reproductive health among young girls.
