The Importance of Philosophical Hermeneutics for Literature and Religion

Literature and religion were the two most important shaping influences of human culture in the West until the scientific revolution, with its initial conception of a mechanical universe, undermined the hitherto generally accepted notion that the human mind participated in an inherently meaningful cosmos. 1 Recognizing this break with the long-standing notion that human consciousness participates in a greater, meaningful reality is crucial for any adequate understanding of philosophical hermeneutics because this particular twentieth-century branch of continental philosophy depicts itself as an attempt to heal the breach caused by the scientific revolution.

On Hermeneutics

The practice of interpreting texts is complex, and the problem is made worse when texts seem alien to the reader. How can we overcome barriers to understanding? Where do we start, and what must we do? And what is hermeneutics anyway? This beginner's handbook on hermeneutics provides a simple approach to textual interpretation, introducing a method that is holistic and humane, focused on listening and openness. We must take account of our presuppositions, analyze literary and historical-grammatical contexts, and organize our thoughts based on the meanings we discover. And then we must act, verifying or falsifying what we have found. This open content book is an essential guide for students as they interpret texts of all kinds, and is meant as a companion for writing and research. Helpful notes are provided for key concepts, and each step of the process is briefly explained, along with questions for further analysis.

Hermeneutics and History

Journal for General Philosophy of Science, 1976

According to the contemporary hermeneutical school the distinguishing feature of the humanities is the capability of the inquirer to communicate with the object of his inquiry. This idea underlies K.-O. Apel's model for the humanities adopted from psycho-analytical therapy. It is argued (1) that there is no sense in which the object of the historical inquiry can be regarded as aKommunikationspartner of the historian; and (2) that when the traditionalVerstehen doctrine is re-interpreted counterfactually (e.g., “If I were Caesar, then ...” substantiates my explanations of Caesar's actions), then the doctrine has an acceptable application to history and the charge of psychologism is removed.
