Testing Long Run Relationship between Exports and Imports: Evidence from Pakistan
2010
Exports and imports together play an integral role in determining the trade balance of a country. In this respect the dynamics of relationship between these variables hold significant importance and attract the researchers for testing the nature of relationship between exports and imports. This study empirically examines the long run relationship between exports and imports for Pakistan using quarterly data for the period 1972-2006. The econometric framework used for analysis is the Johansen Maximum Likelihood cointegration technique, which tests both the existence and the number of cointegration vectors. Results show that there is a long run relationship between exports and imports and the country is not in violation of its international budget constraint. Furthermore, for testing the stability of long run equilibrium relationship and direction of causality, vector error correction model (VECM) technique has been applied. The findings confirm the stability of the long run equilibri...
Cointegration Analysis of Exports and Imports: The Case of Pakistan Economy
This paper analyzes the long run association between Pakistan's exports and impor results of both the and Johansen (1991Johansen ( , 1995 cointegration reveal a long run relationship between the two variables. The error correction model results demonstrate that both of the variables converge towards long run equilibrium. This specifies the effectiveness of macrocosmic policies in stabilizing the international trade balance.
Impact of Trade on Economic Growth of Pakistan: An Ardl to Co-Integration Approach
Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities
This paper explores the relationship between export growth and economic growth in the case of Pakistan by employing time series data for the period 1971- 2013. This study has incorporated variables like GDP (Gross Domestic Product) exports, imports and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). We have applied ARDL to co-integration and Error Correction Model (ECM). The study provides the evidence of stationary time series variables, the existence of the long - run relationship between them, and the result of ECM revealed short rum equilibrium adjustment. Pakistan has many options for enhancing the export of the country. There is a dire need to minimize trade barriers and restrictions such as import and export quotas. Government of Pakistan had introduced Structural Reforms for liberalization, privatization and de-regulation which will actually shifted the trend of trade at a significant level in the end of 1980s. Low levels of interest rate can help exportable industries in which investments...
iranian economic review, 2018
T his paper empirically examines the relationship among exports, foreign direct investment, current account deficit and economic growth in Pakistan during the period 1975-2016.We adopted the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to co-integration together with ECM techniques to trace the long-run as well as the short-run relationships. The results demonstrate the existence of a positive and significant relationship among exports, foreign direct investment and economic growth both in the long-run and short-run in Pakistan. While, results depict that current account deficit is negatively and significantly correlated to economic growth in the long-run and short-run. Furthermore, the Granger causality test reports the unidirectional causality running from exports to economic growth.
Impact of Exports and Imports on Economic Growth in Case of Pakistan
2018
It is obvious that exports and economic growth have a positive relationship, means that as export increases it leads to increase in economic growth. The aim of this research study is to find out the impact of export and import on economic growth in the long run. The study has utilized a time series data that covers time period from 1981 to 2017. To check the stationarity of the data we have used (ADF) test, after confirming that the data set is stationary, the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) or bound testing approach is applied to check the long run relationship among the economic variables. The result of this study shows that export has a positive impact on GDP growth in the long run. The import variable remained negative and insignificant.
An Empirical Analysis of Sustainability of Trade Deficit of Pakistan
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2000
This paper empirically investigates the long run convergence of exports and imports for Pakistan's economy. The cointegration approach based on Johansen (1995) method of Full Information Maximum Likelihood (FIML) is used. The results show that trade flows are cointegrated implying the country is not in violation of its international budget constraint. Therefore it suggests that overall Macroeconomic policies are effective in bringing imports and exports into an equilibrium in the long-run. The results imply that trade imbalances are short-run phenomena and are sustainable in the long-run.
Determinants of Pakistan’s Exports: An Econometric Analysis
Comparative Economic Research
The research investigated the determinants of Pakistan’s exports by using time series data from 1990–2016. Certain econometric tests were also applied to check cointegration among variables. A unit root test was used to check the stationarity of selected variables. After the stationarity of the data, a vector error correction model is used to estimate the effect of regressors, like foreign direct investment, gross domestic product, employment level, and consumption expenditures on a dependent variable, i.e. exports in the short run. The result shows the positive relationships that foreign direct investment, gross domestic product and employment level have on exports, and the adverse impact of consumption expenditures on the dependent variable. The study uses Johansen’s cointegration test for the long run. The results show that all the variables are co-integrated in the long run. It is suggested that the government should encourage foreign direct investment and gross domestic product...
The Determinants of Pakistan’s Trade Balance: An ARDL Cointegration Approach
2010
This article is an attempt to examine the short and long-run relationship between the trade balance, income, money supply, and real exchange rate in the case of Pakistan's economy. Income and money variables are included in the model in order to examine the monetary and absorption approaches to the balance of payments, while the real exchange rate is used to evaluate the conventional approach of elasticities (Marshall Lerner condition). The bounds testing approach to cointegration and error correction models, developed within an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) framework is applied to annual data for the period 1970 to 2005 in order to investigate whether a long-run equilibrium relationship exists between the trade balance and its determinants. Additionally, variance decompositions (VDCs) and impulse response functions (IRFs) are used to draw further inferences. The result of the bounds test indicates that there is a stable long-run relationship between the trade balance and income, money supply, and exchange rate variables. The estimated results show that exchange rate depreciation is positively related to the trade balance in the long and short run, consistent with the Marshall Lerner condition. The results provide strong evidence that money supply and income play a strong role in determining the behavior of the trade balance. The exchange rate regime can help improve the trade balance but will have a weaker influence than growth and monetary policy.
