Structural development during nonlinear free-radical polymerizations
Macromolecules, 1988
Relationships have been derived which describe structural development in nonlinear free-radical polymerizations as a function of conversion. The recursive analysis is based on the assumptions of ideal network formation and those assumptions standard in the kinetic analysis of linear free-radical polymerizations. Significant is the fact that changes in average primary chain length (e.g., due to drift or Trommsdorff effect), which in linear systems give rise to large polydispersities, can be accounted for in these relationships. While it is shown that for many systems such rigor is unnecessary in the pregel regime, it is also shown that neglect of such effects in the postgel regime may lead to serious errors. For the case in which monomer depletion is the only source of a changing kinetic chain length, the gel point is observed to be delayed and the network observed to be looser in comparison with the case in which monomer depletion is neglected.
Nonlinear Dynamics and Polymeric Systems: An Overview
ACS Symposium Series, 2003
This chapter provides an overview of nonlinear chemical dynamics and synthetic polymeric systems, the progress that has been made in bringing these areas together, and some issues that merit further study. Some key themes and results of nonlinear chemical dynamics are cited, and an attempt is made to link them to important questions in polymeric systems. Nonlinear Chemical Dynamics Nonlinear dynamics is a vast field, originating in mathematics and physics, we shall focus here on its chemical aspects. In this section, we provide a brief overview of the key concepts and phenomena relevant to chemical systems. The next section considers nonlinear dynamics in polymeric systems. Finally, we consider future directions for the field. A more detailed treatment of nonlinear chemical dynamics, including a more detailed discussion of polymer systems, may be found in reference (i).

In this work a comprehensive mathematical framework is developed for modeling gel effect in branched polymer systems with application in the solution polymerization of vinyl acetate. This model is based on sound principles such as the free-volume theory for polymer chains diffusion. The model predictions for monomer conversion and number-and weight-average molecular weights were found to be in good agreement with published data in the literature. Moreover, the joint molecular-weight distribution-long chain branching distribution is calculated by direct numerical integration of a large system of nonlinear ordinary integral-differential equations describing the mass conservation of macromolecular species in a batch reactor. This allows studying the effect of process conditions such as initiator and solvent concentration on the product quality. It is believed that this work might contribute to a more rational design of polymerization reactors. V

Dynamic viscoelastic moduli of an example polymerizing system namely the free radical bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), is studied using a Haake® rheometer-reactor assembly and an adapted Haake® HV-DIN cup-and-bob assembly. A series of experiments on the bulk polymerization of MMA under different temperature histories (isothermal, step-increase and step-decrease) and at two different initiator [2, 2′azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN)] concentrations, have been carried out. The data on the storage modulus, G′, the loss modulus, G″, and the phase shift, δ, are measured during the course of polymerization, well into the gel effect region. A new correlation is developed for these properties. The kinetic model and the correlation for the zero-shear viscosity, presented in our earlier studies, are used in this generalized correlation. The correlation so developed is observed to represent experimental data quite well for a variety of temperature histories. The characteristic relaxation time, τ i , representing the bulk polymerization of MMA is observed to be larger than the Rouse value, τ R , by a factor of about seven. The findings are observed to be in agreement with several other studies for entangled nonpolymerizing systems.

Critical properties for gelation in free-radical crosslinking copolymerization
Macromolecular Theory and Simulations, 1995
A kinetic model was used to predict the molecular weight developments and the critical properties in free-radical crosslinking copolymerization. The predictions of the model were compared to the experimental data reported previously. Agreement of the kinetic model with experiments is satisfactory for both low and high crosslinker contents. The model parameters indicate increasing extent of shielding of pendant vinyl groups as the reaction proceeds due to the increasing number of multiple crosslinkages. The calculation results indicate that the real critical exponents can only be observed in the region E < 10-2-10-3 where experimental studies are very difficult. Outside of this region, the apparent critical exponent y describing the divergence of the weight-average molecular weight was found to deviate from the classical value due to the conversion dependent kinetics of free-radical crosslinking copolymerization.
