AMRS based on GPRS provides many advantages compared to other remote metering techniques. It uses TCP/IP and PPP protocol for communication and GPRS is an extension of GSM provides higher data transmission speed and more security. The benefits of implementing such system include robust data transmission, wide area network coverage, lowering power consumption, cost-effective and reliable. An interface system (IS) has been developed that can be plugged in existing digital energy meter and a new meter can also be developed with this IS. The proposed IS collects meter data and send that data to the server using GPRS modem. Each IS is capable of two-way communication. To send meter data existing GPRS networks have been used. This paper describes the detail hardware design of an interface system, step by step procedure of TCP/IP, PPP protocol implementation. The paper also shows the data transmission and reception with server end in real world.
GPRS-Based Electrical Energy Monitoring System
Energy efficiency in buildings and facilities has become an important part of the efforts for reducing environmental pollution. In order to develop strategies for efficient allocation of energy resources aimed at reducing power consumption, certain electrical quantities needed for analysis must be measured and monitored. In this paper, we propose a low-cost architecture of the remote electrical energy monitoring system based on GPRS communication.
An Automated Energy Bill Metering System Based on GSM Technology
Journal of Natural Sciences Engineering and Technology, 2021
The measurement of the energy consumed by residential and commercial buildings by utility provider is important in billing, control, and monitoring of the usage of energy. Traditional metering techniques used for the measurement of energy are not convenient and is prone to different forms of irregularities. These irregularities include meter failure, meter tampering, inaccuracies in billing due to human error, energy theft, and loss of revenue due to corruption, etc. This research study proposed the design and construction of a microcontroller-based electric energy metering system using the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) network. This system provides a solution to the irregularities posed by the traditional metering technique by allowing the utility provider have access to remote monitoring capabilities, full control over consumer load, and remote power disconnection in the case of energy theft. Proteus simulation software was used to model the system hardware and the ...
Design and Development of GSM based Energy Meter
International Journal of Computer Applications, 2012
Traditional metering method for retrieving the energy data is not convenient and the cost of the data logging systems is high. So this paper presents of design and development of Automatic meter reading (AMR) system. AMR system is a boom for remote monitoring and control domestic energy meter. AMR system give the information of meter reading, power cut, total load used, power disconnect and tempering on request or regularly in particular interval through SMS. This information is being sent and received by concerned energy Provider Company with the help of Global system for mobile communication (GSM) network. Energy provider receives the meter reading within a second without visiting person. AMR minimize the number of traditional visits required by employs of energy Provider Company. This system not only reduces the labor cost but also increase meter reading accuracy and save hugs amount of time.
Arduino and GSM based smart energy meter for advanced metering and billing system
2015 International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Information Communication Technology (ICEEICT), 2015
Every management system is trying to make automatic, portable and remote control. This work presents a novel smart energy meter for an automatic and superior metering and billing system. The integration of the Arduino and GSM Short Message Service (SMS) provide the meter reading system with some automatic functions that are predefined. Firstly, we have simulated the project in PROTEUS 8.0 then successfully implemented on the circuit board in laboratory. The proposed energy meter system can incorporate with embedded controller and GSM modem to transmit the data like consumed energy in kWh, generated bill, security services (line Cut/On) over GSM mobile network such as data can be then fed and integrated into existing energy management systems located at power companies or organizations to provide the services among the customers without man-power. Our implemented project is able to provide all required services remotely for metering and billing with high fidelity.
GSM Based Automatic Energy Meter Reading
The technology of e-metering (Electronic Metering) has gone through rapid technological advancements and there is increased demand for a reliable and efficient Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system. This paper presents the design of a simple low cost wireless GSM energy meter and its associated web interface, for automated messaging and managing the collected data globally. The proposed system replaces traditional meter reading methods and enables remote access of existing energy meter by the energy provider. Also they can monitor the meter readings regularly without the person visiting each house. A GSM based wireless communication module is integrated with electronic energy meter of each entity to have remote access over the uses of electricity. Live meter reading from the GSM enabled energy meter is sent back to this billing point periodically and these details are updated in a central database. A new interactive, user friendly graphical user interface is developed using AVR visual studio and C programming. With proper authentication, users can access the developed web page details from anywhere in the world. The complete monthly usage and due bill is messaged back to the customer after processing the data.
GSM based Energy Meter Reading and Billing
In present world almost all industrial systems are based on wireless communication, as it has many advantages. The development of a fully Automated Energy Meter which is having capabilities like remote monitoring and controlling of energy meter will lead to transparency in the energy meter reading and billing system. Automatic Meter Reading system (AMR) will continuously monitors the energy meter and sends data on to a server system of service provider through wireless communication where data will be stored as well. Later the bill details will be sent to the customer through SMS. It saves huge human labor. Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) technology is used to communicate between the service provider and the customer. This system avoids the human intervention in power management. If the customer does not pay the bill in time, the user is informed through SMS system using GSM. If still customer does not pay the bill then as per designed late consideration, one alert message will be sent then automatically the power connection is disconnected from the remote server. This developed system provides efficient monitoring of energy meter reading, power control mechanism, avoids the billing error and also reduces the cost of maintenance.
IJERT-Live Energy Meter Reading and Billing System through GPRS
International Journal of Engineering Research and Technology (IJERT), 2015
https://www.ijert.org/live-energy-meter-reading-and-billing-system-through-gprs https://www.ijert.org/live-energy-meter-reading-and-billing-system-through-gprs The current electric meter doesn't have provision to monitor our electricity consumption. Also, the provision for generating bills automatically is limited and inefficient. Until now, Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system uses SMS as the medium to transfer data to the server. But, the designed energy meter uploads the reading periodically to a central public server through GPRS. GPRS is more cost effective than SMS and is very useful in frequent update. There is no need for a person to visit every home at the end of every month for checking the reading. The bills are generated automatically at the start of every month. In recent years, the number of smart phone users have increased drastically. The users can view their current Energy meter reading and also pay their Electric bills through mobile application. The users can also monitor their Energy meter on-line and they are also given an option of paying the bill on-line. By using this system, the users will be aware of the electricity usage in his/her home. With slight modifications to the system, it can be used by corporate companies to monitor their power consumption and help them reduce the power wastage to a greater scale.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A GSM BASED ENERGY METER
Wireless automation in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and billing has come of age. Traditional metering methods for retrieving the energy data of consumers is not convenient. The present system of energy billing is error prone, time, resource and labour consuming. The problem worsens when consumers try to bypass meter units, thereby pay less than what is actually consumed or the case of overbilling by the Electricity Company as the case in many Nigerian houses. This paper presents the design and implementation of a GSM based remote operation of an energy meter which proffers the solution to power theft, consumption control, auto billing and payment, data logging and labour reduction in power distribution and management The objective of this project is to facilitate energy consumption measurement and its corresponding billing scheme. The materials and method deployed herein is the use of a microcontroller unit that continually monitors the meter interfaced with a GSM MODEM with a dedicated SIM for remote operations. The method used to carry out this project is the principle of serial communication in collaboration with embedded systems. The meter provides corresponding billing Information on a LCD screen
