Carex castroviejoi Luceño & Jiménez Mejías (Cyperaceae), a new species from North Greek mountains. (original) (raw)

Carex castroviejoi Luceño & Jiménez Mejías is a new species of sedge described from the North Greek mountains, particularly in the montane forests of the Pindus range. This perennial plant is characterized by specific morphological traits including its trigonous stems, unique bracts, and the structure of its male and female spikes. Its ecological preference for boggy soils over ophiolitic rocks and its distribution in endemic regions of North Greece highlight its significance in local biodiversity. The species is named in honor of Dr. Santiago Castroviejo Bolíbar, a notable figure in Spanish botany, as it exhibits an independent lineage within the Carex genus, which may lead to new insights into the taxonomic complexities of related species.
