The complexity of challenges faced by global societies will require sophisticated technical solutions. A dramatic expansion of knowledge is expected that could lead to new technologies to address global problems. However, knowledge generation is challenging traditional education that focuses on transmission from teacher to students. Information technology can improve engineering education in three important ways: • multimedia instruction • virtual team projects • class management tools. Perhaps the most important factor in educating engineers to meet challenges to sustainability is the development of the professional engineering educator, an instructor who is able to adopt the latest computer-based instructional technology.
ICT in engineering educational content delivery: Challenges and opportunities
Engineering Leaders World Congress on Engineering Education 2013, 2014
Despite the attractive features of ICT in education, and the many advantages that successful use of these technological resources can offer to the education sector in general, their use in engineering educational content delivery is still lagging behind other educational disciplines. In this paper we look closely at the challenges that face full utilization of these technology resources in engineering educational content delivery, the great opportunities that ICT can offer, and actions that can be taken to overcome the challenges. The challenges are exemplified in: the quantitative nature of engineering discipline, lack of awareness of pedagogical use of ICT in education and the lack of clear policy of how and what type of engineering educational content delivery mode can benefit most from available ICT resources. Opportunities available for full utilization of ICT facilities are summarized in: the wide availability of computing resources, high speed internet access and general ICT ...
ICT Needs and Trends in Engineering Education
Many technologies are shaping the way we learn and teach engineering education. Using learning technologies successfully in the classroom requires educational research to discover the usefulness of existing tools, the absence of desired tools, and the best pedagogical-use models to ensure that student knowledge grows and matures. This paper documents the results of a global survey on engineering education learning technologies that was distributed to a diverse group of engineering researchers and practitioners. The survey asked each participant to choose the three learning technologies that will likely impact engineering education in the near future. 375 participants responded to the survey offering the current view of learning technologies in engineering education. The results from data mining are documented so that researchers in learning technologies can focus on theory and product development.
The Use of ICT in Education for Improving Engineering Education and Training
The benefits of ICT in science, technology and mathematics (STM) education are several and desirable. This paper outlines the role of CAL software, its importance, scope, merits and systematic procedures for its development. It recommends and suggests collaborative strategies for integrating ICT into science, technology, and mathematics education for effective teaching and learning at all levels of the educational system in the country.
Technology-Enhanced Learning and the Pursuit of Sustainability
Sustainability
The inroads of sophisticated technologies and related applications in the field of education trigger several developments related not only to the processes of managing education institutions across levels and domains but also pertaining to approaches to teaching and learning. As advances in technology impact all aspects of life, when adopting and adapting to these advances, the education sector is expected to respond to issues and processes that current technological revolution triggers in the entire society. Hence, effective and forward-looking manner of managing technological advances in the education sector today is a necessity to ensure sustainability of that sector in the future. The objective of this Special Issue was to reflect on these issues, to identify the key questions that have to be addressed in this context, and to encourage new critical insights into these developments.
Pedagogical Integration of Technology into Science, Technical and Vocational Education
2015
Introduction Technology is an integral part of human lives and increasingly present in African societies. It has been introduced to varying degrees in all educational disciplines, especially in science, technical and vocational education. At the dawn of the twentyfirst century, technology is becoming more vital to the society. Technology can be used to perpetuate a teacher-led, knowledge-based learning approach, or it can be used to help implement a student-centred, constructivist and progressive approach. Computers are also becoming more affordable and are indispensable to many people in their daily activities. Investing in technology, with proper training of teachers, provision of modern and quality equipment, and software in each classroom, would be a major gain in preparing students for the future. Improving teaching and learning is the key to integrating technology into the classroom. Technology integration is also very important because once a teacher is well prepared, he/she ...
Over the past 25 years, Technology Education has been present in global curricula. It aims to prepare students to cope with the 21st Century where industrial and technological products dominate international economies. Technology Education has been taught either as a separate subject or integrated with other subjects, particularly with Science, and has been perceived as an area of learning combining knowledge and innovation. This paper identifies aspects of Technology Education which have been embedded in Science subjects in the Saudi curriculum and promotes the concept that it is now time for it to be developed as an independent subject, contributing to the reform of education for C21st learning in Saudi Arabia. This paper seeks to understand the perceptions of students from different institutes (see Table 1), and Science and Technology teachers in primary schools in the Almahd region about the nature of Technology Education. The goal is to explore the notion of teaching Technology Education either as a separate subject or integrated within Science in Saudi primary schools. A quantitative approach has been conducted for this purpose, with two types of questionnaires for data collection involving students and science teachers. Participants have acknowledged the importance of teaching Technology in primary schools and have offered different perceptions of how this might be achieved.
Bridging the Gaps between Technology and Engineering Education
2018
The great technological development in which we are immersed has changed the scenarios, tools and forms of learning. Inthe light of those challenges, engineers must be able to develop new skills and abilities to face them, through plannedtechnical pedagogical training that allows them to link technology with engineering education. As a result of previousresearch, the need for a link between technology and education in engineering was evident, as was the need for training inplatforms for the creation of virtual learning spaces. To this end, the proposal was applied to a case study involving a groupof engineering educators from the Escuela Polite cnica Nacional de Quito. This research aims to present the results of theimplementation of a training programme for engineering educators to improve their competence in new technologies andthe teaching design methodologies applied to the design of online learning environments for engineering. To achieve thisgoal, the training included a frame...

The emergence of new technologies in education area is changing the way of organizing the educational processes. Teachers are not unrelated to these changes and must employ new strategies to adapt their teaching methods to the new circumstances. One of these adaptations is framed in the virtual learning, where the learning management systems have been revealed as a very effective means within the learning process. In this paper we try to provide teachers in engineering schools how to use in an appropriate way the different technological tools that are present in a virtual platform. Thus, in the experimental framework we show the results outcomes in the analysis of two data samples obtained before and after the implementation of the European Higher Education Area, that would be extrapolated for its innovative application to the learning techniques.
