Narrating One's Self: St Gregory the Theologian

St Vladimir's Theological Quarterly, 2018

Why did St Gregory the Theologian narrate his own self so personally, in the context of his autobiographical poetry? Gregory (ca. 329 or 330—390) wrote many words to express his unerring faith in God and on the basis of his Theological Orations he was given the exceptional title of “Theologian” in 451. The main personal work this article reflects on is Gregory's longest autobiographical poem titled, Concerning His Own Life.
