The Impact of Parental Separation and Divorce on the Health Status of Children, and the Ways to Improve it

The divorce rate rose steadily in recent years, becoming a significant social problem. Many studies showed that the divorce has negative impact on children, but there are many different interpretations of the consequences of this situation on children's lives. There is no doubt that children are being affected by the sudden change in their familial environment as well as by additional influences that accompany the divorce process. It is well recognized that the divorce process affects the mental state of the children, including development of behavioral problems, negative self-concept, social problems, and difficulties in relationships with the parents. Among these children there is a higher frequency of depression, violence, learning and social deterioration, and high risk for suicidal attempts. Research in recent years had shown that the divorce process apparently affects also the state of physical illness in children. Based on clinical and empirical studies in recent years, for most children, the traditional visiting arrangements are out of date, unnecessarily restrictive, and do not meet the interests of the children themselves. There are many advantages for children in separation and divorce situations when the children's living arrangements allow the caring fathers to be actively involved in the life of their children, when there are broad visiting arrangements or even shared custody arrangements. In these situations, there is a significant reduction in the negative aspects of the divorce process and there is an objectively beneficial effect on children's adjustment, which is also reflected from the experience of the children themselves. We describe the situation in Israel and recommend the appropriate management in these cases according to our experience and recently studies.

Children of Divorcing Families: A Clinical Perspective

Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 1999

A B S T R A C T This article describes a project based on a service provided to families going through the divorce process and its aftermath. As divorce Þgures increase, a growing proportion of children will experience its effects and some will have that experience more than once. If present trends continue, one in four children will experience the divorce of their parents before they reach the age of 16. Research in this Þeld is relatively recent and the evidence is controversial. Some studies conclude that children of divorce do worse than those in intact families in several aspects of their development. Other studies suggest that it is the combination of divorce with other factors that makes a difference in terms of childrenÕs development. The model described includes interviewing children and parents separately as well as offering family interviews. Particular attention is paid to the childrenÕs perspective as our clinical experience shows that in the acute aftermath of divorce, there is a conßict between the parentsÕ own needs and their ability to think about the childrenÕs needs. Issues emerging from the interviews, such as the loyalty bind in which children often Þnd themselves and the need for a coherent story of the parentsÕ separation, are discussed. Clinical examples illustrate a way of working towards a more cooperative method of parenting in order to meet the needs of the children.

Bronfenbrenner's Socio-Ecological Theory provides the basis for this study, explaining how personal characteristics and context interact to influence human development and behavior. In this qualitative study, phenomenological design was used to provide a comprehensive understanding of the children's adjustment to parental divorce. The first theme is divided into four categories: Family structure, custodial parent-child relationships, noncustodial parent-child relationships and relationships with root family. The second theme is divided into three categories: The teacher-student relationship, peer relationships, and the school counselor-student relationship. The third theme is divided into two categories: Teacher-parent collaboration and school counselor-parent collaboration. The fourth theme is divided into three categories: Dynamics of the education, law, and economic systems. (P2) Also, the effects of the events witnessed and/or directly experienced by the children in the divorce process on the children's adjustment were come forward in the interviews. These events can be identified as one-time or ongoing negative interactions between the step-parent/parents' partner and the child, attendance at court, witnessing domestic violence, confiscation of belongings in the house, and living on the street. ''There was fighting, insults, alcohol, and everything else. We were able to divorce thanks to the children's testimony. (crying) We came here on our own and built a home. I don't regret getting divorced, but I'm sad because my children are exposed to it.'' (E8) ''Because the children were exposed to very different situations, such as the presence of someone in their father's life, the child calling and someone else answering the phone... my child had no idea what swearing was, and for the first time (I heard), my child was swearing on the phone when that woman answered the phone.
