Abstract
In main sources of Islam –Holy Qur’an and Hadiths by Prophet Mohammed (pbuh)- number of forty is used repeatedly. For example in Qur’an we see the ‘number of forty’ in four different verses. Number of forty is also very important for tasawwuf/ sufism and Arabic. In Arabic ‘number of forty’ is used for expressing multiplicity. A noteworthy point in those hadiths that ‘number forty’ is generally used for making the expression easier and point the multiplicty out but the real meaning except for the hadiths about duties or prayings. For example hadiths about worships as alm, ‘number of forty’ was used in real meaning. Because numbers as in “forty sheeps” or “thirty neats” for alm, never changes. So we can say that, in hadiths ‘number of forty’ is generally used for encouraging people to do good behaviours. In this article, we studied more than forty hadiths which have ‘number of forty’ in their matn one by one. Afer that we pointed out those hadiths’ authenticity (sihhah) and gradated them. At the end of this study, we saw that those hadiths are weak (zhaif). An other noteworty point in those rumours of hadiths is to be transmitted by certain narrators (râvis). Number of these narrator is about twenty. They could be listed in order of abundance in the rumor: Enes b. Mâlik, Abdullah b. Abbâs, Ebu Hureyre, Câbir b. Abdullah, Abdullah b. Amr b. As, Ebu Eyyub el-Ensar, Omer b. Hattâb, Ali b. Ebi Tâlib, Ebu Said el-Hudri, Ebu Eyyub el-Ensâri, Ebu Zer el-Gifari etc. Those hadiths in our study are generally located in the following resources: Kutub-i Sitte , Ahmed b. Hanbel’s Musned , Hâkim’s Mustedrek , Taberani’s Mu’cem .
