1982, Energy Conversion and Management

In October 1981, the third International Conference on Energy Use Management (ICEUM--III) was held in Berlin, Germany. Providentially, Germany's first building and energy conference (BAUTEC), slated to be held at the same time, was combined with ICEUM--III offering an excellent opportunity for international comparisons, particularly European/North American comparisons in: federal, state and local policies as they affect energy use in the built environment; integrated technical developments (such as cogeneration, district heating, infro-structure development); urban, suburban, and rural design/growth decision-making and energy implications; building design, construction, retrofit, and evaluation for significant gains in energy efficiency, while protecting occupant's well being; material and component development for major energy savings (such as glazing materials and assemblies, insulation, heat exchangers); and building energy management. Forty-one papers are contained in the ICEUM proceedings, and approximately 30 more are anticipated in the BAUTEC proceedings. The arguments and results presented in these papers on the topical areas above are summarized here.
