Abstract

The Woman Center. An Architecture not only for women. The buildings hosting Women Centers, which I am going to describe to you, have all been built in sub-Saharian West Africa: one in Rufisque \u2013 Dakar, by three Finnish women, architects Hollmen, Reuter, Sellman, together with Ukumbi NGO, which offers building design to poor communities; the second one, in Ruanda, by Sharon Davis, the third, in Burkina Faso by Francis Ker\ue8, a native from Gando, in Burkina, but German-trained architect, and last but not least , the one in Mater\uec, Benin, designed by the Sustainable Architecture Unit of University of Venice, under my direction. The philosophy of all of these projects consists in achieving more, using less. This approach fosters innovation facing the lack of resources; using local materials, local knowledge and local technologies we want to create holistic and sustainable design solutions
