This study is an effort to analyze grammatical features of conversation models in an English textbook. Conversations in many school textbooks written by non-native speakers have the risk to be lack of naturalness of real-life communication. “Bahasa Inggris” was written by three Indonesian writers. Since conversations have specific features that differ from written language, this study aimed to find out the answer to the questions: how do conversation models in “Bahasa Inggris” share common features of naturally-occurring conversations?; how are non-clausal units as constructional principles of spoken grammar realized?; and what gambits are used? The Bisayan language, a subgroup of the Austronesian languages, has a sound system that is representative of the Malayo-Polynesian languages. It is used as a means of communication in the provinces of Cebu, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Southern Leyte, Southern Masbate, and almost anywhere in Mindanao. Bisayan speakers constitute the second-largest ethno-linguistic group in the world. With the implementation of MTB-MLE, studying the similarities between English, the universal language, and Bisaya is considered significant. Verbal Function and Valency in Kinamayu Dialect of Surigao del Sur, Philippines

Function and valency of verbs are two of the unexplored features of Kinamayu dialect in Surigao del Sur, Philippines; hence, this study attempts toanalyze and describe the syntactic structure and features of sentences in Kinamayu by focusing on the interface level between the verb and its syntax. This corpus-based study is qualitative in nature. It examines the corpus taken from legitimate key informants who were chosen through purposive sampling procedure. Data were sourced out through interviews, focus group discussion and direct elicitation. Findings revealed the distinctive syntactical features of Kinamayuwhich are dictated by the verbs used. One of which is that Kinamayu is a verb initial language with the verb functioning as the head of the structure placed in the initial position of the sentence. Kinamayu also allows a verbless sentence structure particularly in sentences linking the subject to its complement. Kinamayu is also unique as it is one of the few languages in the world which can be classified as pro-drop or null subject languages allowing the dropping of subject, and whereby verbs can appear alone in the sentence. This is made possible through one of the types of valency of verb known as avalent. Other types of verb valency also uncovered in Kinamayu are monovalent, divalent and trivalent. The study concludes that Kinamayu verbs as the head of the structure exhibit lexicosyntactic property which dictate the existence and number of arguments in the sentence.

The implementation of Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTBMLE) will require definitive rules for orthography and grammar. While there are such rules for some Philippine languages, there is a need to determine the agreement and points of departure between the rules and the usage to avoid confusion. This study makes an objective analysis of the levels of agreement, in terms of grammar and orthographic rules, between reference books and actual usage as evidenced from web-mined text corpora for three major Philippine languages, namely Filipino, Cebuano-Visayan and Ilokano. A list of language rules on grammar and orthography were selected from standard reference books for each of the aforementioned languages. Alternative forms of usage for each selected language rule were identified, and frequency counts were made, to be used as bases for a comparative analysis between the rules prescribed by standard reference books and actual language usage. The techniques used in this study are important in language education, serving to identify areas of confusion in language use in aspects of grammar and orthography.

A Study on the Behavior of Cebuano Pronouns in Discourse

Sometimes reference grammars are limited in space and time and thus cannot always describe some given aspects of a language very accurately. Linguistics studies certainly help to fill this gap. Using narrative and conversational data, this paper attempts to accomplish this and aims to contribute to Cebuano linguistics and the study of pronouns by looking at two phenomena involving pronominal expressions in Cebuano discourse. First, I will show that two third-person pronouns never co-occur in the same clause. In transitive clauses with two human participants, only one will be referred to using a pronominal form; the other one will either be in zero form, if more topical, or in lexical form, if less topical. The Multidimensionality of Cebuano Pronominals - Avenues for a Qualitative Investigation

The study explores the properties of Cebuano pronominals in written discourse. Using Cebuano texts that are accessed online as its corpus, close textual analysis was done that aimed at determining the position of the pronouns in the clauses of written discourse. Findings reveal the dynamic nature of Cebuano pronominals in relation to the other morphological elements preceded or are followed by them. First, if the pronoun is attached to the verb, the position of the personal pronouns changes depending on the affix attached to the verb as the affix functions to denote the time the action was taken by the agent. Second, in terms of syntactic structure, Cebuano and English pronouns are similar. Third, the syntax of the personal pronouns is relative to the morphological unit these are attached to. In the case of a negative clause, deletion of the verb the initial pronoun follows is observed. Fourth, Cebuano pronominals are context-dependent rather than gender-determined. In sum, the findings open interesting avenues for students in Applied Linguistics to further investigate. For one, these observations may be explored individually using qualitative mechanisms of analyzing Cebuano pronominals and how they spell power relationships. Additionally, a contrastive analysis may be done between Cebuano pronominals and other Asian or Indo-European languages.
