Level of Cyberbullying among Malaysian Children: Some Empirical Evidence

Previous studies have highlighted that the Internet offers various online opportunities to users, for example children, and that the Internet possesses great potential to boost their educational and provide health information. Scholars have emphasised the great utility of the Internet in successfully raising awareness regarding children online safety issues and enhancing social relationships. However, despite the positive effects of the Internet, it has negative effects as well. Nowadays, children and adolescent are increasingly using the Internet at younger ages, through diverse platforms and devices, and there have been rising concerns about children’s safety online. The chapter investigated the level of cyberbullying among Malaysian children and discovered that the level of cyberbullying among Malaysian children is moderate. However, since the results of the study found majority of the children surveyed had experienced cyberbullying at least once, it therefore concludes that there is likelihood that cyberbullying could become a menace to the Malaysian child online.

Cyberbullying in the Social Media Environment: Investigating Young Adults' Experiences in Malaysia

The rise of social media in Malaysia has transformed communication, yet it has also ushered in cyberbullying. This study explores cyberbullying experiences among Malaysian young adults, focusing on their engagement, language use, and coping mechanisms. Data from 148 university students reveal that cyberbullying is prevalent on platforms like Facebook which is mainly instigated by strangers, online contacts, classmates, and friends. The most common cyberbullying types identified are physical-related and intelligence-related. While most participants acknowledged the harm of offensive language, a significant portion admitted to ignoring incidents, emphasising the need for targeted interventions and education to combat cyberbullying among Malaysian youth.

Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the relationship between netiquette, loneliness and emotional availability of parents and cyberbullying behaviour. Data was collected from tertiary students from a public university in Malaysia using survey questionnaires. Based on the findings, it was found that only netiquette was found to have negative significant relationship with cyberbullying behaviour. This study is significant to the Ministry Higher Education, institutions of higher learning education and community on identifying the factors and subsequently creating awareness programs in dealing with cyberbullying behaviours.

Cyber Aggression-Victimization Among Malaysians Youth

Cyber aggression has become a growing problem in today's society. It offers convenient opportunities to humiliate, bully, or harass others online. Global studies on cyber aggression found that youths who were aggressed online reported feeling depressed, anxious and afraid. They showed poor academic performance, and experiencd eating disorders, alcohol, drugs and substance abuse. Cyberbullying perpetration and victimization among adolescents in Hong Kong

Cyberbullying is a growing concern worldwide. Using a sample of 1917 secondary adolescents from seven schools, five psychometric measures (self-efficacy, empathy level, feelings regarding a harmonious school, sense of belonging to the school, and psychosocial wellbeing) and five scales regarding bullying experiences (cyber-and traditional bullying perpetration and victimization; reactions to cyberbullying victimization) were administered to explore the prevalence of cyberbullying in Hong Kong. Findings indicated that male adolescents were more likely than female adolescents to cyberbully others and to be cyber-victimized. Cyberbullying perpetration and victimization were found to be negatively associated with the adolescents' psychosocial health and sense of belonging to school. Cyber-and traditional bullying were positively correlated. Multivariate analyses indicated that being male, having a low sense of belonging to school, involvement in traditional bullying perpetration, and experiencing cyber-victimization were associated with an increased propensity to cyberbully others.

The Validity and Reliability of the Malay Version of the Cyberbullying Scale among Secondary School Adolescents in Malaysia

The effect of cyberbullying among adolescents in Malaysia is not much studied. The Cyberbullying Scale (CBS) has been validated to be used among English speaking adolescents to measure cyberbullying but not in Malay language. Therefore, its validity should be established before use in the Malaysian context. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Malay version of the CBS (CBS-M) among secondary school students. The study was cross-sectional and involved a self-administered questionnaire with 16 items from CBS-M, and 21 items from the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21).
