Entrepreneurial social responsibility: scoping the territory (book chapter)

Ethics in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises: a global commentary., 2010

In this chapter scope the relationship between entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Both entrepreneurship and CSR have attracted increased interest in the early 21st century and been positioned as offering solutions to economic, social and environmental challenges. Previous attempts to determine causal influence between the two concepts have been inconclusive. We explicate the difficult to define concepts of entrepreneurship and CSR by focusing on entrepreneurial process and positive social change in particular. We identify three distinct approaches to this relationship: ‘mainstream’, ‘counter-cultural / critical’ and ‘reformist’ and locate our contribution in relation to these streams of ideas. Building on the CSR definition of Aguilera et al. (2007), we define Entrepreneurial Social Responsibility (‘ESR’) as the dynamic consideration of, and response to, issues beyond the narrow economic, technical and legal requirements of the firm to accomplish social and environmental benefits along with traditional economic gains. We argue that the territory of ESR can best be explored through the use of a multi-level analysis approach to researching the entrepreneurial process. ESR is important both conceptually and in policy terms and is an advancement because it occupies an intellectual space neither fully revealed nor addressed in existing CSR or entrepreneurship research. In moving towards a response to the research question: In what circumstances is positive social contribution an outcome of the entrepreneurial process?, we present a multi-level conceptual model of ESR. We enhance the CSR field by integrating a dynamic approach into the concept, and enhance the entrepreneurship field by opening up to more systematic study the social and environmental qualities of a social phenomenon that is often interpreted within an exclusively economic and instrumental frame of reference.

We examine how entrepreneurial ventures can employ sustainability to do well (create a competitive advantage) by doing better (creating more social good than is created by Corporate Social Responsibility). We compare and constrast CSR and sustainability and examine factors influencing the competitive strategies of large, established firms versus entrepreneurial firms. We conclude that established firms are likely to focus on CSR while entrepreneurial ventures are more likely to pursue sustainability as a strategy for creating private and social value and durable competitive advantage. Established firms will do well by doing good, while entrepreneurial ventures will do well by doing better.

INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE CORPORATE SECTOR, HEALTHIER CORPORATE SECTOR THROUGH CSR AND STRONGER CSR THROUGH SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Turkish Journal of Entrepreneurship, 2018

Governments and welfare organisations like United Nations Organisation have to a great degree failed in bringing peace, prosperity and inclusive development to our ailing world. It's time to invite the corporate sector that is capable of substantial development to step in the inclusive development process that will lead to prosperous future for all. But the evils in the corporate arena are spreading fast, innumerable recent researches in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) prove that the gap between the display of CSR principles on papers and their actual application is widening day by day leading to frauds, mounting corruption and coercion in business spheres. Many corporate bodies are accused of behaving unethically including issues like inadequate salaries to employees, social suppression, killings, detrimental behaviour towards nature, etc. The narrowing corporate goal for an inclusive development is turning into a demonic and immoral money making throat-cut competition. This article focusses on the concepts of CSR and Social Entrepreneurship, various corporate failures and their reasons, and suggests the use of CSR principles through Social Entrepreneurship to make corporate bodies fit to be invited for inclusive development projects.

Relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility and Entrepreneurship - Evidence from Romanian Entrepreneurs

2020

Nowadays, one of the essential issues of any business is represented by CSR. Corporate Social Responsibility is also known, from a European view, as the “Responsible Business Conduct” of everyone, and so this paper highlights the importance of being responsible from early beginnings. Being actual “revolutionary forces”, entrepreneurs contribute to national wealth and growth, job creation, productivity stimulation, adaptation and innovation to meet ongoing changes in market demands. We analyze the conduct of young entrepreneurs and discuss their knowledge in the matter of CSR. We ask young entrepreneurs: What type of CSR actions their firms undertake? How their age and size of the firm influence CSR actions? Their answers are to be analyzed and discussed in a broader context as one of the European Union. Measuring CSR awareness among young entrepreneurs shows a significant increase at a macro level but still a low rate when looking at other UE countries. Our findings prove that entre...

Title: Embedding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with Firm Entrepreneurship: A Contested Exploration to Advance Corporate Social Entrepreneurship (CSE)

2016

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and entrepreneurship of firm both are widely researched scholarly domains. CSR is simultaneously a contested yet widely accepted concept in the academic and practitioner world. Creating shared value embedding social and business objectives together is more or less explored and adopted by the firms and known to the world. However, going beyond embedding social and business objectives for greater value creation is something which has not well explored thus far in the extant literature. Therefore, this study builds on a hitherto ignored linkage in scholarly literature and business practitioner media on how CSR can add wider nonfinancial value to organisations, encouraging them to invest sustainably in social activities. Still CSR is often seen as frivolous or as an act of profiteering whereas this study shows a genuine possibility that investing in CSR can unlock not just novel opportunities for firm entrepreneurship, but a unique interface that ca...

Both CSR and social entrepreneurship concepts represent the same sustainable values in different ways. Thus, finding effective methods for accelerating social entrepreneurship through CSR activities will be fruitful for the betterment of the corporation's stakeholders, social entrepreneurs, and society at large. This paper aims to explore the current CSR activities of corporations that influence social entrepreneurship development and to identify the most effective methods/practices to accelerate social entrepreneurshi...
