An Evaluation of Contemporary Additions to Refunctioned Architectural Heritage (original) (raw)

Examination of Contemporary Additions Made with Adaptive Reuse of Historic Building Heritage

2023

Historical buildings, which are at the center of social memory, are important components of the built environment and urban life. Due to the change in living conditions over time, historical buildings lose their function and integrity is deteriorated, and they face the danger of extinction by taking structural damage. Since these structures bear the traces of the period in which they were built and form the identity of the city, they should be protected and their continuity should be ensured. Historical buildings can meet the demands of users by making contemporary additions in the context of adaptive reuse, as well as by preserving their current state and function. Within the scope of this study, the issue of making a contemporary addition to historical buildings, which is one of the adaptive reuse techniques, has been examined. The reasons for the contemporary additions applied to the historical buildings with adaptive reuse were examined and presented in subtitles. In the examined buildings, the transformation of historical buildings that were destroyed due to factors such as the need for new space, change in function, wear due to wars and natural disasters were analyzed and the original and contemporary additional construction systems were compared.

Role of Architectural Preservation Processes on the Permanence of Heritage Buildings of Value

Kurdistan journal of applied research, 2022

Architectural heritage is the cultural and civilizational achievements that man inherited from his ancestors, acquiring a qualitative value that has proven its importance and originality in resisting the forces of change. It is becoming a visual reference. The architectural heritage has been exposed to natural and human factors that caused much damage. This requests to deal with these factors at every level through joint action, which includes the maintenance and protection of heritage buildings. One of the essential parts of the preservation process is the reuse of the building, whereby an actual or new function is given to the building to preserve, sustain and reconfigure it in a way that preserves its originality, composition, and balance without compromising its relationship with the environment. The research problem is the fragile focus on the importance of functional value when starting the architectural preservation work, even though it requires an in-depth study of the extent of the impact of this change on preserving the heritage value of the building. The study aims to clarify the process of preservation in heritage buildings and the use of the rehabilitation process based on the architectural characteristics of the building. For this purpose, the analytical method approach of pre-and post-conservation blueprints was used through photographs to illustrate the impact of functional change in preserving the building's heritage value. The new role can introduce new values, such as political, historical, or social, to satisfy the needs of the new structure. From here, the research concludes that preserving the permanence of the architectural heritage can be

Some considerations on the preservation of 20 th century architectural heritage

Modern Building Reuse, 2014

These brief notes relate to the shared reflections and discussion that took place at a seminar held in 2011 at the Escola de Arquitectura da Universidade do Minho, which dealt with the general context on the safeguarding of 20 th century architectural heritage, with special emphasis on conservation and maintenance practices. These considerations are not intended to be conclusive or systematic, as they do no more than highlight some of the questions raised in the course of the debate. The seminar involved a discussion of both theoretical and methodological issues, followed by the presentation of concrete examples.

An Evaluation on the Importance of History Research in Architectural Conservation Applications

4. INTERNATIONAL GÖBEKLİTEPE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH CONGRESS, 2022

Architectural preservation, dating back to ancient times; it is an important field of study, the development of which is based on the recent past. Conservation studies, which consist of the preparation of survey, restitution and restoration projects and the implementation phases, include a very intense and multi-disciplinary process. Architectural preservation, especially for the repair of buildings with antiquity, is closely related to the discipline of history in this context. It is of great importance to conduct in-depth historical research in order to carry out the process from the first stage of the conservation work to its completion in a healthy and reliable manner. As a matter of fact, the determination of the sources of the materials and deteriorations detected in the analytical surveys of the buildings, the periodization studies, the acquisition of the restitution data and finally the implementation of the intervention decisions are carried out in the light of the data obtained from the historical researches. However, although the importance of the conservation-historical research relationship was emphasized with approaches such as “Historical Restoration Theory”; in the past, the criticized aspects of this idea according to today's contemporary restoration practices have led to the negative discussion of this relationship. In this context, the aim of the study is to reveal the close relationship between architectural preservation practices and the discipline of history and to emphasize the importance of this relationship. In this context, various examples of the use of historical data in conservation practices are also mentioned. Based on the examinations and examples, principled suggestions have been made about the intensification of historical research in conservation.

Analyzing the Quality of New Developments in Historical Monuments

Following the rapid growth of cities and changes which are seen in the way of living, a lot of old buildings and many historical houses have become exhausted. Various needs of the modern human have affected towns and ancient monuments amazingly fast and if we neglect them, none of the values obtained during the centuries will be maintained. However, half a century's experience shows that we have to intervene, design and develop these ancient spaces. Intervention and design with the aim of providing the newest facilities to live with respect to the principles shaping historical spaces not only would not damage the spirit of the ancient historical spaces, but also they would improve the values of our ancient monuments and historical sites. As can be seen in the rest of the paper, the methodology of this research consists of a combination of strategies. In fact, the effective factors in the success or failure of the integration and development of the historical buildings are defined and finally, applying contemporary architecture with an interactive approach in development is proposed.

Use of Architectural Heritage: Challenges of Preservation and Adaptation

Architecture and Urban Planning, 2012

The problem of the 21 st century heritage preservation is to raise the heritage to modern life. The study object is the adaptation of architectural heritage and ways of using it. The review of international and Lithuanian legislation and scientists' insights formed a controversial equation: maximum preservation, minimum changes, appropriate adaptation. The analysis of medieval castles detected prevailing adaptation conception in Lithuania ("ruins' park", "anemic") and recent signs of technological interpretation.

Evaluation criteria for architectural heritage under a system of rapid changes

Conference proceedings, 3rd Intl. Conf. "Cultural heritage in the XXI century: conservation, use, popularization" (KSUAE, Russia), 2015

The World Heritage Convention (1972) offers different typology for «cultural heritage» and defines it as monuments, groups of buildings (ensembles) and sites, but also sets number of different values of significant cultural heritage and also a requirement of «outstanding universal value» (OUV) for the World cultural heritage. The cultural criteria have been modified several times over the defining the entire terminology, i.e. the general sessions for that subject were organized from 1976 till 2005 by UNISCO, ICOMOS and other cultural heritage organizations. However, the comprehensive discussions and debates on the «OUV concept», «OUV criteria» and Statement of Significance and contents of its definition and relevance, satisfying the requirement conditions of authenticity and integrity, and difference between the statement of outstanding universal value for World heritage monuments and sites, and statement of significance for the rest of the cultural heritage, are an on-going process of polemics even nowadays. It can be expressed by paradigm of changes for cultural heritage conservation relating to a non-stop rapid urbanization and globalization, and indeterminate evaluation criteria for cultural heritage.
