The later years caused that it became one of the most important sources of export revenues. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the development of international tourism in Cuba in the years 1985-2010. The authors also want to determine the level of regional development of tourism infrastructure and tourism movement. Furthermore, one of the specific objectives is to determine the causes of spatial diversification of the level of tourism development. In the case of Cuba three basic factors determine the level of tourism development. The first of is the recreational value of coastal areas (Veradero, Cayo Coco, Santa Lucía), the second is natural attractions (Valley of Vinales) and the third – cultural heritage (Trinidad, Habana, Santiago de Cuba). Analyzed data will be compared with other economic and social statistics to provide an inclusive depiction of spatial changes in Cuba’s tourism sector.

2019

The growing global concern for sustainable and alternative tourism development has strengthened the scientific research and management of tourist destinations. In this context, the objective of this study is to characterize the tourism system of the city of San Juan de Los Remedios in order to understand the current problems and design sustainable solutions. It corresponds to a quali-quantitative, applied, deductive and multidisciplinary propositional research, in which the basic principles of strategic tourism planning were implemented. It presents, in a sequential and integrated way, an inventory of the local tourism system, a diagnostic study based on SWOT analysis, and a pro-jective study for the consolidation of sustainable tourism. It concludes that there is favorable potential for urban tourism use, though this is not currently being pursued in a sustainable way; further, there is a lack of regional territorial cohesion. This situation demands higher levels of strategic planning , as well as the creation of a destination management organization and a tourism observatory at a local-regional level. These approaches would strengthen the holistic management of the territory and lead to the creation of a competitive, multipurpose , multi-product destination.

RETOS. Revista de Ciencias de la Administración y Economía, 2019

The new social, economic and environmental demands make necessary to design touristic projects where the local community is considered as the foundation for their creation and development. The main objective of this article is to elaborate a methodological proposal to design touristic projects based on the participation and management of this community. In this sense, the literature review is used to develop touristic projects through the local community, since it is the local community that stands out as a forgotten part in the generation and management of touristic projects. Thus, the methodological proposal consists of eight stages: I) Sensitization of the local community, II) Contextualization of the place, III) Design of the tourism product, IV) Identification and analysis of the demand, V) Decision of the price, VI) Commercialization, VII) Market Test and VIII) Implementation of the touristic project and follow-up. Although the generation of touristic projects is a heterogeneous task, and it depends on many intrinsic and extrinsic elements, this document aims to be a general guide which helps to integrate the residents of the destination as managers of tourism activity.

SHARED TOURISM TERRITORY, COASTAL REGION OF SERGIPE, BRAZIL (Atena Editora)

SHARED TOURISM TERRITORY, COASTAL REGION OF SERGIPE, BRAZIL (Atena Editora), 2021

This study presents the main results of a doctoral dissertation in Geography—Sergipe, 2005-2009, in partnership with the Curso de Maestría Desarrollo Económico en América Latina Graduation Program in Economic Development in Latin America, International University of Andalucía (UNIA), Huelva, Spain (2006-2011)—and of research conducted since then. This analysis highlights the territorial tourism policy and the role of the state in the investments in the public space of Polo Costa dos Coqueirais region and the expectations of a shared territory in overcoming poverty. A phenomenological-hermeneutic method was used in a participatory research process. This decision allowed the development of workshops and notebooks strategies to gather document and field data. The following results stand out: the approaches of international agencies, especially that of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), have not contributed to projects that improved the indicators of income of the affected population; the negotiation and support bases of those who represent the Polo’s civil society are contradictory because they influence the effectiveness of public tourism policies but do not perform governance functions; investments in tourism have impacted differently on these communities, and partially fulfill what was established in the investment program of the multilateral agencies, especially the IDB. Therefore, the present study puts forward a proposal of a territorial matrix of community-based tourism, which embodies effective citizenship, to develop at local level a new model of tourism development that contributes to reduce poverty.
