Optics and Photonics Journal, 2013
In this paper, an effort is made to analyze the integration of direct detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DDO-OFDM) with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to reach high data rates of 1.050 Tb/s over 3600 km single mode fiber (SMF). The 1.050 Tb/s signal is generated by multiplexing 30 OFDM signals with 35 Gb/s for each OFDM. The performance of the system is studied by measuring the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of each WDM channel; signal to noise ratio (SNR); and bit error rate (BER); while analyzing the constellation diagram of all users. Also, the relationship between the OSNR and BER is studied and it is noticed that as the OSNR increased, the BER decreased. As can be seen form the results, as the transmission distance increased the BER increases and to keep the BER less than 10 −3 we need to increase the OSNR.
In this paper, we analyzed various modulation formats for wavelength division multiplexed systems operating at data rates 8 X 40 Gb/s = 320 Gb/s. The performance analysis of WDM system for Non return-to-zero (NRZ), Return-to-Zero (RZ) with duty cycle 0.5 and 0.67, Carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ), Duo binary RZ (DRZ) and Modified Duo binary RZ (MDRZ) like modulation formats are considered to find optimum modulation format for a 40 Gb/s bit rate optical transmission system . We analyzed performance of WDM system by varying input power from -15 dBm to 10 dBm for a fixed transmission distance of 300 km (considered only SMF length) for all modulation formats mentioned above with 100 GHz and 200 GHZ spacing between each channel and also compare performance for 100 GHz and 200 GHz spacing for each modulation formats. Dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) was chosen as a dispersion compensation technique to evaluate the effect of modulation format on them.

Given the growing need for long haul transmission that requires a high rate of data, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing scheme (OFDM), is regarded as a technique with high potentials for high-capacity optical networks. OFDM transmits over both optical and wireless channels, with the data distributed over a huge amount of the subcarrier, and the data is distributed over a huge number of subcarriers. OFDM achieves RF signal for a long-haul transmitting by utilizing Radio over Fiber (RoF) system, which is known to produce higher orthogonality of the OFDM modulated signal designed for the wireless network. RoF systems comprise of heterogeneous networks designed through the use of wireless and optical links. The aim of this paper is to carry out an investigation of the performance of the external modulation in RoF links, while analyzing the shortcomings caused by the various elements of the optical system. The Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) can be applied in external modulation, and exhibits a more robust performance when implemented with the OFDM modulation technique. 1. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, Wireless communication system needs growing capacities and comprehensive advantages. Wireless networks, which have become vital in day-today activities, are being extensively used in military and civilian applications. Our way of life has been modified by the rapid evolution of communication systems and the rapid advancement of internet; these have led to an increase in the demand for bandwidth [1]. Wireless networks have become so important, such that, without it, it will be impossible for people to transmit vital private information such as control messages, credit card information, e-health data and energy pricing [2]. In other words, reliable mobility and high-transmission bandwidth are required by modern day telecommunication systems. Due to the rapidly growing number of next generation smart mobile devices, and novel bandwidth-intensive user applications like Netflix, Facebook, YouTube, etc., there is an increasing demand for wireless data capacity [3]. With the introduction and evolution of such applications, the way mobile communication systems are used has revolutionized. Due to the advancement in cloud computing/network storage, there is an increasing need for bandwidth of high capacity. The role of wireless communications is crucial in mobile phones and other consumer electronic devices such as tablets, TVs, etc., that need wireless connections with high speed for applications like instant over-the-air backup , HD-video streaming as well as other multi-media rich applications [4].

Demanding extra Bandwidth and high data rates has been meet by the integration both of wired and wireless communication systems. For that the Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology has gained a traction. In this article a Coherent Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CO-OFDM) is proposed as the main wired system for transmitting data at high rates suffers from the polarization mode dispersion and chromatic dispersion of the optical channel which mitigates the data rates. Thus, to combat these limitations a Desperation Compensation Fiber (DCF) which adds negative attenuation to the optical signals transmitted in optical fiber is suggested. Moreover, the addition of Wavelength- Division- Multiplexing (WDM) to the system of transmission provides better bandwidth saving, high data rates, and better spectral efficiency, and power utilization. The efficiency of high data rate CO-OFDM integrated with RoF for long haul transmission between 100km and 450km with data rates up t...
IMPROVING SPECTRAL EFFICIENCY OF THE 8 X 112 GB/S PDM 16-QAM WDM SYSTEMS
We carried out simulative analysis to investigate the spectral efficiency of 8 X 112 Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexed systems based on polarization-multiplexed 16 quadrature amplitude modulation format along with coherent detection and digital signal processing. We employed SSMF fiber as a channel with pure EDFA amplification. The WDM system was analyzed and compared by measuring performance parameters with channel spacing 100 GHz,75 GHz, 50 GHz and 25 GHz at a fixed length of 100 km at 0 dB power level.
Comprehensive Study of Different ROF Modulation Schemes in Optical Fiber Communication
The ever growing broadband internet applications have increased the traffic capacity and demand for wide network coverage. Radio over fiber (ROF) is a combination of Wireless as front end and Optical Fiber Communication as Back-haul networks. ROF network provides mobility for users with high quality bandwidth and better geographical access. In this paper, we analyze Q-factor, BER & eye patterns for various Modulation schemes such as MSK, DPSK, OQPSK, CPFSK and Q-CPFSK (Quadrature) by means of Bit-rate and fiber length. Our Simulation results shows that Q-CPFSK gives better performance compared to other schemes at Optical Carrier Frequency of 193.1THz.
121.9-Gb/s PDM-OFDM Transmission With 2-b/s/Hz Spectral Efficiency Over 1000 km of SSMF
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2000
We discuss optical multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and show that by using multiple parallel OFDM bands, the required bandwidth of the digital-to-analogue/ analogue-to-digital converters and the required cyclic prefix can significantly be reduced. With the help of four OFDM bands and polarization division multiplexing (PDM) we report continuously detectable transmission of 10 121.9-Gb/s (112.6-Gb/s without OFDM overhead) at 50-GHz channel spacing over 1,000-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without any inline dispersion compensation. In this experiment 8 QAM subcarrier modulation is used which confines the spectrum of the 121.9 Gb/s PDM-OFDM signal within a 22.8 GHz optical bandwidth. Moreover, we propose a digital signal processing method to reduce the matching requirements for the wideband transmitter IQ mixer structures required for PDM-OFDM.
