The Development Dilemma: Analyzing the Long Term Impacts of Structural Adjustments in Brazil and how it shaped the Economy of Brazil

Brazil had faced many changes in its time, as a country it must be ready to handle endless of crisis and prepare better strategies not only to survive but to encourage growth and development. In the past, Brazil was the leading world producer of many agricultural goods and raw materials. Products such as sugar, rubber, and coffee were important exports and were the main focus of the Brazilian government on its export led growth policy. However, as the competition grows and everything is modernized there are price variations in the world market for these commodities, and this condition left the Brazilian economy vulnerable. This vulnerability led the government to make some changes in the system. Right after the crisis, which hit the Latin American countries hardly, Brazil had its structural adjustment whereas they limited the role of government in the industry. Therefore the paper will analyze the steps, which had been taken by the Brazilian government that was meant to bring development. It will highlight whether or not the adjustments were suitable for the political economic condition of Brazil itself and its progress throughout the year. This paper will attempt to evaluate the implementation of the adjustment itself in the past decade.

Este estudo avalia o impacto das políticas macroeconômicas sobre o lado real da economia brasileira. Apresentamos um modelo estruturalista de crescimento com base em Rada (2007) para investigar o recente desempenho econômico do Brasil. A matriz de contabilidade social para o Brasil em 2006 serve de base para o modelo. Nós investigamos os efeitos de curto / médio prazo de quatro exercícios de simulação: um aumento no investimento autônomo (espíritos animais), um aumento nos salários formais, uma depreciação da taxa de câmbio, e um aumento do crescimento da produtividade do trabalho. Os resultados sugerem que a economia brasileira segue um regime de crescimento fracamente puxado pelos lucros. Nesse sentido, apenas políticas macroeconômicas que aumentam o investimento autônomo e a produtividade do trabalho podem estimular a economia

What are the determinants of economic reform efforts? This paper tries to throw light on this question by examining recent reforms in Brazil, a country which followed a gradualist approach and was a late-starter among Latin American economies. We argue that these first generation reforms (trade liberalization, stabilization, privatization and the adoption of a new macro-policy framework) were driven by
