Factors Affecting the Academic Performance by Habtamu Legese.pdf

Journal of Education and Practice, 2018

The main objective of this study is to identify factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students of Raya University (RU), Maichew, Ethiopia. In order to achieve the stated objectives of the research a stratified sampling was used to select 146 students from 17 departments of the university. To analyze the collected data and to investigate factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students the ordinary list square (OLS) and Tobit regression methods were used. The findings reviled the existence of significance relationship between the student’s university cumulative grade point average (UCGPA) and preparatory CGPA, gender deference, place of origin, college of the student, mismatch between teaching and learning style and student’s expectation about their future job opportunity. The above independent variables are statistically significant and they are the major determinants of students’ academic performance. However, variables like, age, study hour, entrance exam result, participation in cooperative learning program, mother’s educational level and department choice were insignificant. Finally, the study recommends that Raya University, the Ethiopian ministry of education, students and students’ families, policy makers and other concerned body should work hard towards improving students’ academic performance, by considering aforementioned determinant factors.

Factors Affecting Academic Performance of University Students: A Study Among the Students of MBSTU

Journal of Economics and Sustainable Development, 2020

The students' academic performance (CGPA) plays an important role in producing the best quality graduates as well as the country's economic and social development. So, for the sustainable economic and social development of a country, it is essential to produce the best quality graduates who will lead the country in near future. Normally, the quality of a student is represented by academic performance which is determined by Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Basically, the study is conducted with the objective of investigating the factors affecting academic performance at undergraduate level in Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University. This paper aims to identify the most important and significant factors. There are many factors that contribute to determine whether the CGPA is excellent, moderate or low. Simple Random Sampling has been used to collect data. A sample of 250 undergraduate students' information was taken. Among the respondents in that sample size, male students are 130 and female 120. Findings shows that family responsibility, average study hour per day before exam or during preparatory leave (PL) have positive impact and positive association with CGPA. On the contrary, spending more time on tuition or part time job have a negative impact on CGPA. Dissatisfaction on studying subject, current education system and job market have significant impact on CGPA which is negative. Job related preparation alongside academic study has a negative impact on CGPA. One thing we have noticed that students who are not satisfied with their studying subject and dissatisfied about the current education system and job market in Bangladesh; their CGPA is lower than those who are satisfied.

An Investigation of Factors that Influence the Academic Performance of Undergraduate Students of Public Universities in Ghana

Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences, 2017

The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which background characteristics, students’ attitudes to learning, and students’ use of social media influence academic performance among undergraduates in Ghana. It was hypothesized that previous performance, hours of study, family income, having a personal study schedule, attending lectures regularly, participating in class discussions, taking notes during lectures, use of alcohol, and use of social media, among other factors will influence a student’s grade point average (GPA). Questionnaires were distributed to 1,500 students across four universities, of which 626 completed questionnaires were returned (N = 626). Correlation analysis showed that only hours of study was strongly related to GPA (r = .1, p = .05). Independent-samples t tests showed that students who had personal study schedules, attended lectures regularly, participated in class, took notes, chatted on Facebook, did not use alcohol, regarded a higher GPA as importan...

Statistical analysis of the factors affecting students’ academic performance in tertiary institutions: A case study of the department of statistics, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

International Journal of Statistics and Applied Mathematics, 2019

This research examined factors affecting students' academic performance in tertiary institutions taking the department of statistics, ABU, Zaria as a case study. Five factors namely: family income, adequacy of lecture halls, availability of reading materials, interest in course of study and reading habits; were considered. A sample of 100 students from the department of statistics was selected purposively and data was obtained through a structured questionnaire with a response value of 90 students. Multiple regression analysis revealed a model which proved to be significant at 0.05 level of significance by Analysis of variance and a multiple correlation value of 0.551 which indicates a strong positive relationship between CGPA and the predictors. The coefficient of determination posited that 30.4% of the variation in academic performance was explained by the predictor variables. The result of the analysis indicated that availability of reading materials, interest in course of study and reading habits contribute to students' academic performance (CGPA).

Assessment of Factors Affecting Students' Academic Performance in Higher Education: A Case Study of Nigeria Air Force Institute of Technology Kaduna, Nigeria

Assessment of Factors Affecting Students’ Academic Performance in Higher Education: A Case Study of Nigeria Air Force Institute of Technology Kaduna, Nigeria. , 2022

The Face validity and reliability of the instruments used were ascertained. The outcome of the reliability test using Cronbach’s Alpha, thus shows the internal consistency Cronbach alpha values that ranged from 0.70 to 0.88 which is considered reliable for this study. The study provides answers to two research questions and two hypotheses that guided the study. Frequencies, totals, percentages, reliability test, independent t-test and regression are the statistical measures used. The results reveal that study habits, and learning habits are factors that significantly impactacademic performance at AFIT. Recommendations were made based on the findings that Students should be taught that their success stories in life are dependent on them alone to start the journey. before others step in and shape it through bimonthly or quarterly seminars and workshops. Educational stakeholders have continued to express concerns over the poor academic performance of Nigerian students at virtually all levels of academic engagements. This paper investigated personal factors as predictors of students' academic performance in the SouthWestern Nigeria. The study employed the ex post facto design using a survey design and a multiple regression model. The samples used for the study consisted of 1,100 (200 and 300) National Certificate of Education (NCE) students in Federal, State and Private NCE-awarding institutions in South Western Nigeria, using stratified sampling techniques. The validated research instruments used for the study had the following psychometric properties: Cronbach alpha (α) [0.79 (students) and 0.73 (lecturers); Guttman split-half 0.78 (students) and 0.71 (lecturers; and Spearman-Brown equal length results were 0.69 (students) and 0.70 (lecturers)]. The study found that a number of personal factors like students' interests, home environment, parental support and study habits were significant predictors of students' academic achievement in the Colleges of Education sampled. On the other hand, students' perception of course and self-concept were not found to be significant predictors of academic achievement.
