During a reorganization of the Notai Defunti fund at the State Archives of Palermo, it was found – inside a file containing the draft (dated 13 October 1526) of a deed drawn up at the desk of the notary Giovanni de Marchisio (ca. 1488-1564) – a short anonymous love letter, probably dictated by a woman, and accompanied by a Sicilian canzuna (eight-verse strophe). The document is presented and edited here for the first time, accompanied by a linguistic commentary and a philological discussion on the poetic text, transmitted with conflicting attributions and variant readings in at least five seventeenth-century collections, surveyed and catalogued by Gaetana Maria Rinaldi. The edition is preceded by a paragraph that traces the professional history of de Marchisio, to whom the sender of the letter could be linked.

Canzuni su una Lanza nel ‘libro’ di Antonio Veneziano

Sulla base dell’edizione critica del Libro delle rime siciliane di Antonio Veneziano curata da G. M. Rinaldi (2012), che conteneva uno studio dettagliato del ms. PR10, si propongono alcune riflessioni circa la struttura generale della raccolta canonica e si mettono in luce per la prima volta le strategie retoriche di nominatio criptata di una donna amata, contraltare lirico della più famosa Celia cantata nel «Libru primu», che fa la sua apparizione in un ciclo di quattordici canzuni all’interno del «Libru secundu» e quindi nella correlata sezione delle poesie di «Sdegnu». On the ground of the critical edition by G. M. Rinaldi (2012) of Antonio Veneziano’s Libro delle rime siciliane, which contained a thorough analysis of ms. PR10, this article offers some new considerations about the overall structure of the canonical collection, and highlights for the first time the rhetorical strategies of an encrypted nominatio of a beloved woman, lyrical counterpoint to the more famous Celia sung in «Libru primu», which makes its appearance in a cycle of fourteen canzuni within the «Libru secundu» and then in the related section of the poems of «Sdegnu».
