Standardizing Government Hospital Libraries: Where Are We Now?

Standards are increasingly important in the practice of all library fields. Hospital libraries are considered to be the basic unit of the medical information system. Hospital librarians provide the right information at the right time to enhance medical staff effectiveness, optimize patient care, and improve patient outcomes. They save clinicians time, thereby saving the institution money. They provide an excellent return on investment for the hospital, playing a vital role on the health care team from a patient's diagnosis to recovery. Their services are also a valuable employee and community benefit, building staff satisfaction with their jobs and patient and family satisfaction with the health care they receive. A hospital libraries in order to survive, their existence must be validated and their contributions must be shown to be consistent with the overall goals of the hospitals they serve. The purpose of this study was to describe and evaluate government hospital libraries by observing and interviewing librarians and library users as key participants. Overall aim of this study is to identify needs and gaps, and make recommendations for further development of a government hospital library standard. This study used a framework and perspectives from which to view these government hospital libraries function and would be within or below the standards. Throughout this study a number of factors regarding the assessment of hospital libraries were examined. Finally, it was anticipated that based on the findings of this study , government hospital libraries would be standardized with competent full time professional librarians, sufficient and well-balanced collections ,adequate facilities and with excellent library services. The study followed a qualitative research approach, involving the use of the unstructured in-depth interview, observations and other related documents as the primary methods and tools in gathering the data. It involved a preliminary descriptive examination of the services, collections, facilities and management of government hospital libraries. It was limited to no more than 5 government hospital libraries because of the time constraints involved in interviewing and subsequent data analysis. The person interviewed was the head / chief librarian of each institution knowledgeable enough and with authority to manage the library and must be in the field of medical and health / government hospital library. Background: Academic libraries play a crucial and constructive role in managing information resources. Because medical universities have an essential role in promoting public health, the position of libraries at these universities is both important and influential. Therefore, this study investigated factors that affect the provision of health information resources in central libraries at Iranian universities of medical sciences. Methods: This applied-descriptive study reviewed factors affecting the provision of health information resources based on document study and the Delphi method. A total of 62 managers of these central libraries were asked to participate. The sample was based on the fuzzy Delphi technique, which provides a solution in two phases. The data were obtained from a qualitative analysis of interviews and results from a researcher-created questionnaire. Results: Six factors were found to be vital to providing health information resources, including support, maintenance costs, country policies, economics, cooperation with high-tech companies, and political challenges. Some suggestions are given to address the challenges of providing resources; the most important was to create visual and audio media with a high diffusion coefficient. Conclusion: Numerous factors can affect the provision of health information resources at Iranian universities of medical sciences. The foundations of these factors are varied, some stemming from economic fluctuations and others from technological developments.

Background. Clinical librarians have specialized search skills to search medical databases to provide clinicians with medical research information needed for evidence-based clinical decision making. However, the importance of cooperation between librarians and healthcare teams does not seem to be well-recognized by clinicians. Objectives. Standards for Iranian Hospital Libraries: Why do Hospital Libraries Need to be Standardized?

The objective of developing the National Standard for Hospital Libraries (NSHL) is to present an efficient tool to replace scientific methods with traditional ones. The standards should be designed to be used as a comprehensive guide for librarians working in hospitals in various fields. Various standards are currently being developed for national, public, and academic libraries. Despite the activity of more than 200 educational and medical centers and a large number of public and private medical centers in Iran, there was no comprehensive standard that could meet this group of libraries' expectations. Service Quality Assessment of Hospital Libraries: a LibQUAL+ Survey

Objective: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the hospital libraries service quality of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences from the users' perspectives based on the LibQUAL+ model. Furthermore, is to make a comparison between library services of general hospitals versus specialized one. Materials and methods: The survey used the LibQUAL+ model to evaluate service quality of libraries of general as well as specialized hospitals of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (12 libraries) (Iran). The data were collected from library clients by administering the LibQUAL+ questionnaire in a printed format. Results: It has been revealed that hospital libraries have succeeded in satisfying the minimum expectations of its users but could not meet the customers' desired expectations that make them delighted. Information Control is the least satisfying dimension, whereas the Library as a place is the most satisfying dimension. The users are more satisfied with general hospitals library services rather than specialized ones in all dimensions. Conclusion: The hospital libraries failed to meet the minimum expectations of users in two dimensions of information control and the library as a place. Thus, it is suggested to improve the quality and quantity of library facilities and to create a pleasant atmosphere for users by considering a proper space for the study of clients. This will lead to help hospital libraries to meet the desired level of requirements of medical community users.
Assessing the Medical Librarians\' Employment Status in Hospital Libraries in Tehran City

Background: Nowadays, it is essential to employ medical and clinical librarians to provide the required information for healthcare professionals and enhance accessibility to evidence based information in hospital libraries. Thus, this study aimed at assessing the medical librarians' employment status in hospital libraries in Tehran city in 2013. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Study population considered from all 152 hospitals in Tehran city. Data collected using a questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS version 18 using descriptive statistics. Results: only thirteen participants had medical librarianship and information science degree. While 28 persons graduated in librarianship and information science from universities affiliated to Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and others had degree in non relevant fields. The majority of participants (51.3 %) with non-related degree were educated empirically and others had learned librarianship skills with other methods. Most of participants were employed based on hiring official process and friends and relatives recommendation. Conclusions: There is a real lack of medical librarians in the hospital libraries in Tehran city. Thus, these libraries are not able to perform their professional duties such preparing information and omitting healthcare professionals' needs in hospitals. It is necessary that hospitals' managers attempt to hire medical librarians' and overcome employment barriers.
Libraries play a pivotal role in the sustainable development of the country. The aim of the present study was to investigate the quality of educational services provided by library of medical faculty of Kermanshah according to the library standards. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 309 library members were studied through Libqual questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The library could meet the expectations of its members in 67% of cases (positive adequate value). In terms of access to information, the maximum and minimum means were reported for printable or electronic journals (7.62%) and electronic resources and websites (5.55%), respectively. With regard to personal control, the maximum and minimum means belonged to easy-access instruments (6.15%) and modern equipment (5.63%), respectively. For location, however, appropriate space acquired the maximum mean (6.59%). Based on the obtained findings, Kermanshah library of medical faculty (LMF) has not been able to fulfill the maximum expectations of its members.

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of users’ satisfaction with information resources and services being provided to the users’ at the Allied Health Sciences (AHS) Library, Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University (STMU), Islamabad. Research Methodology/Approach: Survey approach used to collect the data from university students. Therefore, a questionnaire was developed with the help of an adapted scale of each construct which was applied in this study. A non-probability purposive sampling technique used to determine the sample size. Total of 300 questionnaires distributed among the potential respondents of the study from 1st April to 20th April 2018. Out of the total sample size, 276 questionnaires received back and processed for final data analysis. The present study based on descriptive statistics, however, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 used. Results: Ninety-Two percent (n=276) of users’ responded. The majority of users were satisfied with the physical collection of library, e-resources, reference and circulation services, staff competence and attitude, library catalog, library orientation programs, timing, and the overall rate of library services. They were concerned about library sitting capacity, internet access, printing, and photocopy services. The study suggested that there is a need to improve the web-based library services, provision of better audiovisual collection, high-speed Internet with Wi-Fi access, and off-campus access of scholarly databases. Conclusion: Although most of the users are satisfied with the resources and services this there is still room for improvement. Practicable recommendations prepared in the light of findings have been forwarded to the library committee and Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University (STMU) administration for implementations. Hospital libraries offer many contributions since they participate in learning. The purpose of this research was to study the medical library of University General Hospital of Thessaloniki AHEPA and the way its users respond to it. The findings of the research provide important evidences, which are useful for the management of the particular hospital. This paper shows the strong as well as the weak points of the library. The library staff should look closely at the latest and try to improve the library's performance, so it can became friendlier to its users.
