Teaching sexual diversity in Brazilian schools: an education experience in Foz do Iguaçu
We intend in this paper to present a pedagogical experience that links anthropology and secondary schools in combating heterosexism and violence against the LGBTQ community. The project described here created a pedagogical space where prejudice and discrimination for reasons of gender and sexuality were debated in an educational environment. We believe that especially in these times of global attacks on women's and LBGTQs' rights and human rights, it is essential that at the local level we keep on resisting and creating spaces in which reflection and deconstruction of oppressive structures are promoted. This article deals with the experience of education projects on gender and sexuality carried out by a Brazilian federal university in a city in the interior of the state of Paraná, located on the triple border of Brazil with Argentina and Paraguay. It is important to note that Paraná is a state considered as extremely conservative. We hope to show how we develop an experience of what we call "extension of the university" in Brazil, aligned with research and education on the subject of sexualities. In Europe, those activities are usually called "civil engagement" or "socially-relevant education", though most universities do not have it as constituent of their mission as is the case in Brazil. We understand that this kind of project can be an efficient arena for applied anthropology and also as an investment in educating young people as a valuable human resource to combat violence and to promote peaceful communities. In times of uncertainty, where in Brazil religious groups take more control of secular arenas like the Congress, education for sexual diversity becomes a standing point for anthropologists.
Diversidade sexual e de gênero na escola
Revista Espaco Academico, 2011
The coexistence of different social actors and cultural constructions at schools has led us to think about the interaction processes in such fields of social agency. Different approaches have produced theories and categories that help us to think about relationships that involve equality, inequality and difference. The idea here is to think about sexual diversity and gender at schools in a relational perspective, questioning closed or essencialized identities, understanding this issue as inseparable from broader discussions and approaches not only of authors whose works have touched on gender and sexuality, but also culture and interculturalism.
Inclusion of Sexual Diversity in Schools: Teachers' Conception
Multidisciplinary Journal of Educational Research, 2016
The school is permeated by a variety of individuals with different sexual identities and gender distinct from the heterosexual model, but sexual diversity is not included effectively in this social instance. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to analyze the role of educators in the inclusion of sexual diversity in schools. For this, we used the method of thematic categorical content. The results showed that teachers were not trained in initial and continuing training to deal with sexual diversity, however, they highlight the need for a collective effort to host sexual diversity in schools and suggest teaching methodologies. So is cautioned that the undergraduate urgently need to include this subject in the curriculum, so that teachers are able to promote continuous actions along with the school community, contributing significantly to the inclusion of sexual diversity.

Another principal objective is to expose the necessity of LGBTIQ+ and gender education in schools and teacher training, considering and analyzing proposals given by different authors.
Projeto Fala Sério: uma experiência de educação sexual com adolescentes de escolas públicas de Betim

This article aims to analyze the difficulties and emotionall and social development of adolescent sexuality education in public schools in Betim. This process was possible through the operationalization of the Project Speech Seriously. It was observed that the students mentioned hardships, separations during the development of the workshops. We tried to identify nursing strategies to understand and address these issues. In the methodology we used fragments of the discourse of adolescents to demonstrate the difficulties highlighted and validate the analysis. The selection of the speeches met the criterion of interest in the study. The analysis shows that despite the challenges, nursing students have achieved the objectives proposed by the project, from the standpoint of liberating education-problematizing of Freire, striving for completeness and host throughout the process.

Diversity in School: A Brazilian educational policy against homophobia
Journal of LGBT Youth, 2016
Diversity in School is a Brazilian initiative that seeks to increase understanding, recognition, respect, and value social and cultural differences through offering an elearning course on gender, sexuality, and ethnic relations for teachers and school administrators in the public school system. The course and its objectives aim to enable staff and students in schools to realize their full potential through the promotion of a culture of inclusion. The course is the result of a partnership between the Brazilian government (Secretariat for Policies on Women's Affairs, Secretariat for the Promotion of Policies on Racial Equality, and the Ministry of Education), the British Council and the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM) from the State University of Rio de Janeiro. CLAM has developed the content and the methodology. Since 2008, 40,000 teachers have been trained all over the country. This paper highlights the importance of improving understanding of gender, sexual, ethnic and racial diversity in order to create a positive learning environment inside of schools.
Teacher training on gender and sexual identities in a Spanish context
This thesis is based on action research undertaken in Spain at the Faculty of Education of the University of Granada. The main research objective was to demonstrate the need to train and empower pre-service and in-service teachers so as to enable them to take pedagogical action in favour of LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersexual) and queer persons’ equity in education. In order to fulfil this aim, a pilot study on sexual identity issues with pre-service and in-service primary school English-language teachers was organised, resulting in requests for training in this area. Consequently, two teacher training courses were offered at the same university faculty. The first, in 2011, was given in English and aimed at pre-service primary and secondary school English-language teachers. The second, in 2013, was offered in Spanish to pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as university students, of different educational levels and disciplines. In the training process, emphasis was put on practical activities and classroom interaction based on queer theory, critical and transformative pedagogy, as well as fuzzy set theory applied to sex and gender. This process helped raise the participants’ consciousness of the ongoing complex reality of LGBTI and queer identities in education, and, through introspective personal reflections, to recognise that homotransphobia and heterosexism can affect anybody. Furthermore, they were empowered to take queer pedagogic action into their schools, despite having to face barriers and limitations at both social and institutional levels. This research has contributed to queer pedagogy and literature by creating new knowledge, presenting the theory of sex and gender fuzzy sets for the first time in an academic context and by developing pedagogic strategies to counter gender binarism, homotransphobia, heterosexism and cissexism in education. Moreover, original queer teaching materials were created by the participants of the two courses, both in English and in Spanish. The results of this research also suggest that training on gender and sexual identities should begin from early childhood education in order to be most effective and that it is fundamental to involve in the process not only school staff and students’ parents/ guardians, but also local and national education authorities and society at large, thus transcending academia. Finally, this study highlighted the fact that the existence of progressive Spanish legislation for LGBTI persons is not sufficient in itself unless it is adequately implemented in education. It is therefore necessary to promote teacher training programmes at all educational levels and disciplines through critical analysis and discussion in order to contribute to social and institutional transformation in support of gender and sexual equity.
This paper addresses the challenges one faces when attempting to change the basis of inequality in school associated with attributes of gender and sexuality. Ethnographic procedures are utilized to describe school scenes in three public schools in the city Porto Alegre, which are the stage where actions self-rated as intended to “fight homophobia”, “respect towards diversity” and “inclusion of all”. The aim is not evaluate public policies, since there is little span of field work, instead the reflection on what has been observed and reported is important as an input for monitoring and assessing actions, as well as to stimulate theoretical thinking about the conceptual categories on which such actions are based. The text is structured in three units. The first one deals with the complex conceptual and political discussion that currently involves categories such as difference, diversity, inclusion, equality and inequality, in articulation with the specific field categories: genders, sexuality and masculinities in the school environment. The second unit brings the ethnographic method for school scenes, assigning the context of the schools and groups of students. The third unit narrates some scenes and articulates their contents with theoretical issues and guidelines of the public policies currently in force for the subject. The main hypothesis developed herein is that school actions seem to praise diversity without touching the status of heteronormativity, which adversely affects its outreach.
