The effects of dance education on motor performance of children

This research has been aimed to demonstrate the effects of dance education on preadolescent children. A total of 114 students (56 of whom in dance group/58 in control group) at preadolescent (aged 11±.0 year) and adolescent (aged 14±.0 year) stages participated in the research. Prior to dance classes a variety of tests ranging from motor performance tests, flexibility (sit and reach), dynamic balance (anterior/posterior and medial/lateral), strength (vertical jump and long jump), acceleration (10 m), speed (30 m), coordination (hexagon test) and agility (changing the line test) were conducted. It has been clearly demonstrated that dance education plays an important role on motor development of preadolescent and adolescent children, and comparisons between groups have indicated that children receiving dance education elicit a better line of development.

Creative Dance as a Means of Growth and Development of Fundamental Motor Skills for Children in First Grades of Primary Schools in Greece

Creative dance is currently an exceptional contemporary pedagogical and teaching approach which assists and supports significantly the harmonious kinetic development of individuals. Moreover, it is an amusing educational tool that contributes to the establishment of fundamental motor skills in fostering coordination, cooperation and team co-responsibility, psychomotor development and in the creation of a pleasant teaching environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an interventional program for the development of movement education, having as a central axis creative dance for children in 1 st and 2 nd grade of primary school. Thus, it focuses on developing and improving fundamental motor skills and related concepts of creative movement as far as it concerns space, time, flow, dynamics and relationships. Eighty students (Ν=80) of two primary schools in Thessaloniki, seven to nine years old, followed this interventional program for eight weeks that inclu...

Effect of Dance/ Motor Therapy on the Cognitive Development

Paper provides detailed information about Dance Motor Therapy and its impact on the cognitive development of children. The theory of DMT (Dance Motor Therapy) is based upon the idea that " the body and mind are inseparable ". Dance can utilize intelligence, spirituality, discovery and spontaneity while the body is producing art. The stylization, the language and the potential in the medium of dance makes a human being very sensitive. The study of dance develops a rare intellect and concentration in a person. Dance means the balance, understanding and coordination of the body. It examines the factors influences dance therapy and its positive effect on cognitive development. The result shows that Dance movement Therapy can create a good environment for cognitive development. It is beneficial for the most number of children and implementable for maximum number of teachers.

The Impact of the Experimental Dance Program on the Motor Coordination of Children

Facta Universitatis, Series: Physical Education and Sport, 2019

This research was conducted with the purpose of determining to what extent and how a dance program affects the preschool children's coordination. The sample comprised 65 children of a preschool age (the control group consisted of 31 children, the experimental of 34 children), aged 6 years ± 6 months. The experimental group performed dance activities over a period of 8 weeks (2X35 minutes each week). The control group performed regular activities in the kindergarten. The level of coordination in children was determined applying a BOT-2 test battery (the Bruininks-Oseretsky test of Motor Proficiency). By analyzing the obtained research results, a statistically significant difference was found between the dance and the control group in three variables: Jumping Jacks (0.000), Jumping in place-same sides synchronized (0.012) and Tapping feet and fingersopposite sides synchronized (0.011), respectively. Statistically significant differences between the groups indicate the positive effect of the applied dance program on the development of motor coordination in preschool children using an experimental dance program for twelve weeks. The dance program influences the coordination of preschool age children. The results showed that children participating in the dance program achieved better results in the studied bilateral coordination in three variables, thus recommending its application in the regular preschool curriculum.

Impact of Dance Movement Therpay on cognitive and motor capacities of orphan children

AIM: To explored the effect of dance movement therapy on cognitive and motor capacities of orphan boys with special needs . SAMPLE : Group of 12 children varying between the age group of 4 to 14 years from an orphanage were the sample. The group was primarily neuro typical comprising of 3 special needs children, 2 children with developmental delays and 1 on medication for ADHD showing high motor restlessness and low concentration ability. METHODOLOGY: A 60 hour intervention plan using activities based on DMT was devised on Chasian approach in dance movement therapy. A pre, middle and post assessment were done of the group based on movement parameters and overall group behavior to identify the group needs. RESULTS: Using the DMT plan there were reduction in motor restlessness , increased self observation and enhanced group cooperation amongst team members. Conclusion & Suggestion: DMT is an effective tool to channel children’s physical energy and impact cognitive skills. A longer intervention plan can result in marked changes in achieving larger complex cognitive goals.
