Study to modify the mechanical and chemical properties of building blocks (Thermostone) (original) (raw)
Iraqi Journal of Civil Engineering
This study concern with a new technology to modified the compressive strength of the thermo brick which have a main role in construction field. This research using a new local cheap additives called (tar) which is available in Iraq (Kirkuk area). The experimental program have include three type of thermo brick available in local market (Iraqi, KSA, and Kuwaiti) and these type are common used in south area of Iraq especially Basrah City. The sample has exposed to the steam of tar in different temperature. Four affecting factor are studied carefully on compressive strength of brick including, tar , brick manufacture type, number of exposing faces of brick, and the age of brick after finishing expose of brick to the tar steam. The result shows maximum compressive strength conducted are 4.4 MPa when two faces expose to tar and two hours' time of exposing (one hour for each face) and the modified percentage was 62% compared with reference sample (KSA type). The improvement in compressive strength of Iraqi type and Kuwaiti were 27% and 45% respectively. Furthermore the improvement of compressive strength with same condition aforementioned but for one hour exposing time (half hour on each face) are 37.5%. The chemical properties also has conducted in this study.

The Impact of Materials’ Technology on Sustainability of Buildings
Journal of Engineering
The evolution in materials’ technology in the last decades resulted in interesting projects that aimed at preserving the environment and energy and reduce pollution. They have been taken the principles of environmental design as a basis for architectural thought, starting from the early stages of the design process ending in choosing appropriate building materials to achieve sustainable buildings, but these trying are limited in our local environment and there isn’t demanded seriousness. The research problem emerges in the ignorance of the environmental aspect (ecological system) when selecting building materials during design process to achieve sustainable buildings. The aim of this research is revealing the mechanisms of selecting building materials to improve the functional performance and reduce the negative effects on the environment and preserve its resources and the ecological systems as much as possible according to the following indicators: Embodied energy, recycling, durab...
In this research, the influence of NaH 2 PO 4 .2H 2 O with different concentrations on setting time and compressive strength of bone cement based on hydroxyapatite was investigated. Hydroxyapatite cement is of calcium phosphate bone cements, which can be considered as the best substitute for hard tissues. The powder phase of the cement was prepared from various compositions of calcium phosphates such: tricalcium phosphate (TCP), calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) and montite (CaHPO 4) as constant and the liquid part using NaH 2 PO 4 .2H 2 O solution with different concentrations. The influences of liquid/powder ratio L/P (ml/g) was investigated on the initial and final setting times and compressive strengths of the cement. According to the obtained results, with optimum concentrations of the liquid phase, this cement seems suitable for clinical applications.
Effect of microwave irradiation on physicochemical properties of ilmenite surface
In this research, the microwave energy was used to modify the physicochemical properties of ilmenite surface for improvement of ilmenite floatability. The XPS analysis showed that microwave irradiation oxidizes the Fe2+ ions to Fe3+ ones; and the relative content of Fe3+ on the surface of ilmenite increases from 48.5% to 66%. This oxidation process decreases the ilmenite zeta potential; as its PZC (point of zero charge) was changed from pH=5.4 to pH=3.0. The increase of Fe3+ ions increases the chemisorption of oleate ions on the surface of ilmenite; and results in the formation of more insoluble ferric iron oleate. The maximum adsorption of oleate ions occurs at a pH range of 6-7. After microwave irradiation the measured contact angle of ilmenite increases from 91 to 96 degrees. After oleate adsorption, the surface zeta potential of non-irradiated and irradiated ilmenite is obtained -66.3 mV and -78.1 mV, respectively. Thus, the changes in the physicochemical properties of...

Ferruginous shallow marine limestones of Late Devonian age-mainly Famennian-are widely distributed across central and eastern Iran. The iron, almost hematite, is concentrated in oolitic and skeletal grainstones, skeletal packstones and rarely in lime-mudstones. Hematite occurred as clay coatings on various allochems (ooids, bioclasts and intraclasts), and also as finely dispersed clays within micritic beds. Most grains are concentrically laminated with alternations on ferruginous clays and micro-laminae suggesting that the clays were syndepositionally formed on grain surfaces. The ferruginous beds are commonly associated with ooides and oncoides. The planar to wavy and sometimes discontinuous laminae with individual thickness of 2 to 5 m resemble oncolitic microbialites. The microbial tubules from laminae show several concentric layer of stepwise growth around a core. Micro-morphological and mineralogical characteristics suggest biogenic factors are essential for the formation of ferruginous grains.

The university education represents one of the civilized basic foundation for societies , for it bears the scientific development flag, as well as it plays fundamental role in serving society, with submitting fundamentals educational and society and economy and humanity even spiritual and emotional for the society. And has essential role in graduating educated peoples working with needs of the society. The architectural engineering department is one of the major universities institutions that effect and affected with the society, though it made from and it tool to make its professional leadership that relate with the sustainable development for the society. This research studies the role of university education in the architectural engineering department as an important base that serves sustainable development for it society. Though review for earliest studies and examples from over the world. Effect of microstructure on the mechanical properties of Haversian cortical bone
Bone, 2006
A two dimensional finite element model for the human Haversian cortical bone is represented. The interstitial bone tissue, the osteons and the cement line were modeled as the matrix, the fibers and the interface, respectively. This was due to similarities between fiber-ceramic composite materials and the human Haversian cortical bone. The stress intensity factor in the microcrack tips vicinity was computed using the linear elastic fracture mechanics theory and assuming a plane strain condition. It was therefore possible to study the effect of microstructure and mechanical properties of Haversian cortical bone on microcrack propagation trajectory. The results indicated that this effect was limited to the vicinity of the osteon. If both osteon and cement line were assumed to be softer than the interstitial tissue, the stress intensity factor was increased when the crack distance to the osteon reduced. The stress intensity factor decreased if both osteon and cement line were assumed to be stiffer than the interstitial tissue. The resulting simulation indicated that the effect of existence of osteon on the stress intensity factor was no significance, if both the interstitial tissue and cement line were assumed either stiffer or softer than the osteon. Microcrack trajectory was observed to deviate from the osteon under tensile loading; indicating an independence from the mechanical properties of various tissues. In fact, the microcrack adopts a trajectory between the osteons, thereby increasing the necessary absorbed energy for fracture. This results in an increase in the human Haversian cortical bone toughness. The result of this finite element modeling has been confirmed by through evaluation and comparison made with experimental results.
