Synqx&-We provide here an outline of a course on the role of women in the history of the natural sciences. All students and members of faculty were free to attend. We report our experiences in teaching the courses and some of the literature used. The conclusions we came to on researching this topic are summarised. A combined historical and biographical approach was the most useful. We divided history into epochs in which we examined the cultural political and religious roles of women in society. Then we reported on important women scientists in each period, looking at their autobiographies and summarising, where possible, their scientific contributions. We discussed how the contributions of women scientists are forgotten or suppressed and ways in which the course participants themselves had intemalised the 'androcentric' view of science. The most important finding for us was that throughout history women scientists were numerous, gifted-and forgotten. * J. K. is supported by a Heisenberg-Stipendium. Madame Curie: An Icon of Modern Science

This paper discusses the participation Marie Curie and her daughter in the development of chemistry. These two women developed surveys and participated actively in the dissemination of science, helping to establish it as a modern science as we know it today. These women contributed much to science, and their involvement could have been even greater if it were not for the restrictions imposed by society on their work.

In the last two centuries, Romanian women had to struggle in order to carve a place for themselves not only in sciences, but also in the society. Eventually, their struggle paid off. Today, women can enjoy a prominent career in academia as well as in any other field of their choice. This article provides a concise summary of their struggles and their achievements as well as a short catalogue of the leading feminine figures. It aims at pointing out the main roads to emancipation, modernization and empowerment of women in Romania from the XIX th century onwards.
