Open Source Learning Management Systems in Distance Learning (original) (raw)

A Comparison of Open Source Learning Management Systems

This paper focuses on the comparison communication tools of six open source learning management systems (LMS). It compares the whiteboard/video services, discussion forums, file exchange/internal mail, online journal mail, and real live chat features of each of the LMS’s. There are so many open source LMS out there due to this fact it is a bit tedious looking for a suitable one that will meet the instructors needs. This paper seeks to make it easier for instructors that want to make the best choice when choosing a learning management system by revealing which learning management system has the best communication tools. It also focuses on 6 popular LMS, ATutor, Claroline, Dokeos, Ilias, Moodle, and Sakai. The comparison of the six open source LMSs showed that Moodle and ATutor have the best communication tools with user friendly interface.

Learning Management Systems: A Comparative Analysis of Open-Source and Proprietary Platforms

In the context of distance education, the choice of platform for content delivery becomes a critical success factor. This paper analyzes the state of the art of e-learning platforms, Learning Management Systems and sums up a comparative analysis of some of the most popular open-source and proprietary. I test results on the comparison between the 27 different platforms and e-learning, show that at present there is still a significant gap between open source and proprietary platforms, particularly with regard to the characteristics of social networks.

A Survey Of Top 10 Open Source Learning Management Systems

International Journal of Scientific & Technology Research, 2016

Open Source LMSs are fully flexible and customizable, so they can be designed in line with your school/organization's brand image. Open Source LMSs can also be converted to social learning platforms. You can create an online community through your LMS. This paper describes the most important features in learning management systems (LMS), that are critical to compare and contrast depend on your system requirements. Also represents a multiple LMS providers that are designed to use in university environment.

Using Open source Learning Management System for educating information professionals

The paper analyses and defines a range of international and global trends of higher and continuing education in the context of e-learning with particular reference to the Croatian context. Concepts of distance and blended learning are discussed with the special emphasis on its implementation at the universities educating students in the field of social sciences and humanities. The case study of transforming traditional learning environment (teacher-centred), to the blended learning environment (student-centred) using open-source Learning Management Systems, like Moodle, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, Croatia are presented.

THE ROLE OF OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGY IN DEVELOPMENT OF E-LEARNING EDUCATION

International Academy of Technology, Education and Development, 2017

In the last decade, the consequence of Internet usage in education has increased progressively and new technologies have enhanced student's learning day by day. With the use of distance learning tools or especially open source tools, the student learning can be more elastic with respect to location and time constraints. So, students can access information at any time and everywhere either in libraries or during the lectures. It is widely known that distance learning is costly, and cost-effectiveness becomes more significant as the institutions become huge-level providers of distance education. Cost is the most significant disadvantages of distance learning comparatively to traditional learning surroundings can be detached with the wide features of the Open Source Software. Generalizing the practice of Open Source Software will supply progress of learning tools and enlarges the educational quality. As far as the literature is reviewed, not much research has already been conducted about the comparisons of open source learning management systems in remoteness education. In this study, some analyses and comparisons would be made about open source learning management systems i.e. Moodle was outstanding with many features among other LMS that aspires to get better the educational quality and contain the tools that an e-learning system should have along with library system i.e. Koha and Dspace would be studied.

Study on open source learning management systems: A survey, profile, and taxonomy

Journal of theoretical and applied information technology, 2015

Open Source Software (OSS) in the education field has often been recommended by different researchers in literature. Despite the fact that there has not been evidence, yet, of current OSS dominance over traditional methods, OSS use in education has been steadily increasing and expanding covering new domains. The reputation of the OSS learning system has a great deal of importance when it comes to people interested in adopting a Learning Management System (LMS). At any rate, choosing to start a new application or adapt and modify an existing one is an important decision. The study aims to produce basic guidance towards available OSS LMS, and their substitutes in the field of education. 23 different alternatives were picked from the existing active OSS based on previously published papers, the study also aims to produce a summary of the available studies and guides available, finally the study is aiming to bridge the gaps in the current literature while proposing a taxonomy of OSS LMS...
