Mineral waters have been applied for therapeutic purposes in Cracow since the fifteenth century. The complex geological structure of this area has had considerable influence upon various hydrogeological conditions. Sulphide waters in Cracow and in its vicinity are connected to the presence of gypsiferous formations occurring within the Miocene rocks deposits. Sulphide mineral waters help to treat such cases as: osteoarthritis, diseases of digestive system and nervous system, foodborne diseases, skin diseases, and illnesses of movument organs. The springs of those waters are located in a region that is particularly attractive to tourists. Both historical and natural attractions of Cracow and its neighbouring area create a big opportunity for further development of spa tourism there. This fashionable form of recreation may help old forgotten sulphide waters and Cracow health resorts revive their glamour.

Hydropower, biomass, biogas, biofuels, wind power, solar energy and geothermal energy are the major resources to provide Backa region with most of its. Backa extends between 45°16′ and 46°22′ of the northern latitude and 18°36′ and 20°37′ of the eastern longitude. It occupies the north-eastern part of Vojvodina, i.e. the most north-western part of the Republic of Serbia. That is historical-geographic territory bordered on the Danube on its western and eastern side, the Tisa on its eastern side and with the state border towards Hungary on the north. In this paper, the focus will be on renewable sources, specifically geothermal energy in Backa region. The paper analyzes the characteristics of thermal–mineral waters in Backa, the condition and possibilities of their exploitation in spa tourism, and in other economic branches. The tradition of thermo-mineral waters exploitation in spas and public baths is rather long. Today, this type of thermo-mineral waters exploitation in Backa is the widest spread. Permanent, i.e. continuous exploiters of thermal–mineral waters in Backa are primarily balneal–rehabilitation centres and exploiters using the water for technological purposes.

Mineral waters, based on their physico-chemical characteristics, can have highly beneficial effects on the human health, and, consequently, efforts have been made to study and use them since ancient times. In Romania, there are numerous mineral springs, both in and out of the Carpathian area, which were used by founding permanent or seasonal spa establishments of local or general interest. Băile Perşani is a spa complex located between the Perşani Mountains and the Transylvanian Depression (at an altitude of 486 m), 47 km northwest of Brașov City, on the E68 European road, towards Sibiu. The spa exploits both mineral waters, discovered in 1928, and sapropelic mud. On the territory of Vojvodina in the period from 1969 to 2010 78 boreholes were drilled for the purpose of fi nding thermal mineral water. Serbian part of Banat in Vojvodina has 18 boreholes, most of which in the municipality of Kikinda (six). All boreholes reach fi rst hydro geological system. The geothermal gradient in the municipality of Kikinda is in the range of 0.052 to 0,057ºCm-1, and the density of terrestrial heat fl ow is of 94 mWm-2 to 105 mWm-2, which is signifi cantly more than in the area of the continental part of Europe. Thermal mineral waters in the wells in the municipality of Kikinda are hypothermal, with favorable mineralization, pH and salinity, which enable various possibilities of use. The waters have been used for heating needs of business premises and pig farm. However, in addition, water can be used in balneological purposes, for sports and recreation, agriculture, industry. Thermal mineral water found in the municipality of Kikinda can have a huge part in regional development, but also attract investors from our country and abroad. However, fi nancial and administrative problems are just some of the restrictions when creating or implementing studies for the use of thermal mineral water in the municipality of Kikinda.

Geothermal energy, coal and hydropower are the major resources of Serbia. Serbia has more than 300 mineral and thermo mineral wells and more than 40 spas. Vrnjacka Spa is the most visited spa in Serbia. It is situated in the central Serbia, on the contact of the Goc Mountain and the West Morava valley, e.g. on the 43037‟ of the northern latitude 20053‟ of the eastern longitude. Using different literature sources, article provides an overview of the past and state of exploration of mineral and thermo mineral waters of Vrnjacka Spa. It explains their importance and influence on the development. The article analyzes the characteristics of thermo–mineral waters in Vrnjacka Spa and the condition and possibilities of their exploitation in different economic branches. The most prospective areas of use of thermal waters for heating purposes in the Polish Lowlands
The paper presents results of assessment of geothermal energy resources accumulated within nine Paleozoic and Mesozoic aquifers in the Polish Lowlands, carried out within the framework of the project entitled "Geothermal atlases of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic formations – geological analysis and thermal water and energy resources in the Polish Lowlands". The project commissioned by the Polish Ministry of Environment was carried out in the years 2004–2006 by a research team of specialists from several institutions, with AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków as a leader. The paper presents also the results of studies and proposals for geothermal investment projects in selected towns of central and northwestern Poland. Potential locations of the new geothermal projects are determined. Recreational use of geothermal water in Poland and Slovakia
Slovakia is the country with a long history of the use of geothermal water for recreational purposes. Slovakia possess extensive infrastructure -some of which developed at the site of earlier facilities. In the first decade of the 21 st century, Poland also began to develop geothermal bathing facilities. Many such facilities were successful, which gave rise to even more facilities. The following is a research-based analysis of stage and key determinants of geothermal facility development in Poland and Slovakia, including: -supply of geothermal water, its accessibility and quality, technical issues, costs of extraction, costs of use, costs of waste management, -history and operational traditions associated with geothermal facilities, -legal issues linked to geothermal water extraction, construction of recreational facilities and the use of geothermal water, -new social trend to visit thermal baths, its relationship to wellness and the use of free time.
