We evaluate two types of lexical resources with respect to their applicability to interlingual machine translation:(1) a EuroWordNetbased database of bilingual links between Spanish and English words; and (2) a repository of semantically classified verbs with their corresponding Lexical Conceptual Structure (LCS) representations. We examine the utility of these two resources for the task of lexical selection in machine translation.
Representing the Translation Relation in a Bilingual Wordnet
Abstract This paper describes representing translations in the Finnish wordnet, FinnWordNet (FiWN), and constructing the FiWN database. FiWN was created by translating all the word senses of the Princeton WordNet (PWN) into Finnish and by joining the translations with the semantic and lexical relations of PWN extracted into a relational (database) format. The approach naturally resulted in a translation relation between PWN and FiWN.
Symbiosis Between a Multilingual Lexicon and Translation Example Banks

We propose a symbiotic framework in which correspondences between electronic multilingual lexicons and translation example banks can be captured, so that their functions and contents may benefit and improve upon one another. Several mechanisms are used for this purpose: i.) two flexible annotation schemas, S-SSTC and SSTC + L, for supporting irregular multi-level correspondences across languages; ii.) an axis-based translation cluster structure for connecting translation equivalents; and iii.) translation profiles, for capturing contexts of translation equivalent instances in the corpora. There are two main contributions: i.) the design of SSTC + L, which allows the annotation of multi-word expressions and transla- tion lexical gaps in the translation examples; and ii.) the overall framework facilitating the symbiotic flow of information between the multilingual lexicon and translation bank. We give illustrative examples to show how these mechanisms can be used for translation selection, addition of new language items, and verification of lexicon contents. Preliminary tests show there is potential in our approach.

The approach to multilingual lexical representation developed as part of the ACQUILEX Lexical Knowledge Base (LKB) discussed with specific reference to complex translation equivalence. The treatment described provides a lexicalist account of translation mismatches in terms of translation links which capture cross-linguistic generalizations across sets of semantically related lexical items, and can be readily integrated with several transfer-based MT systems.

We describe an interlingua-based approach to machine translation, in which a DRS representation of the source text is used as the interlingua representation. A target DRS is then created and used to construct the target text. We describe several advantages of this level of representation. We also argue that problems of translation mismatch and divergence should properly bo viewed not as translation problems per se but rather as generation problems, although the source text can be used to guide the target generator.
