An estimate for the resolvent of a non-selfadjoint differential operator on an unbounded domain
Journal of Applied Analysis, 2013
We consider the operator T defined by .Tf /.x/ D .Sf /.x/Cq.x/f .x/, x 2 , where R n is an unbounded domain, S is a positive definite selfadjoint operator defined on a domain Dom.S/ L 2. / and q.x/ is a bounded complex measurable function with the property Im q.x/ 2 L. / for a 2 .1; 1/. We derive an estimate for the norm of the resolvent of T. In addition, we prove that T is invertible, and the inverse operator T 1 is a sum of a normal operator and a quasinilpotent one, having the same invariant subspaces. By the derived estimate, spectrum perturbations are investigated. Moreover, a representation for the resolvent of T by the multiplicative integral is established. As examples, we consider the Schrödinger operators on the positive half-line and orthant.
Resolvent and spectrum of a nonselfadjoint differential operator in a Hilbert space
Annales Universitatis Mariae Curie-Skłodowska, 2012
We consider a second order regular differential operator whose coefficients are nonselfadjoint bounded operators acting in a Hilbert space. An estimate for the resolvent and a bound for the spectrum are established. An operator is said to be stable if its spectrum lies in the right half-plane. By the obtained bounds, stability and instability conditions are established.

In operator theory and its applications, an important role is played by norm estimates of the resolvent of a normal operator or a completely continuous operator belonging to Cp (see [i]). These estimates are true at all regular points. In contrast to this, the author was unable to find similar estimates for operators belonging to other classes in the literature. Let H be a separable Hilbert space and let B(H) be the algebra of continuous linear operators in H. Below we shall obtain sharp estimates for the norm of the resolvent (true at all regular points) for an operator A ~B (H)satisfying one of the following conditions: a) Aj~i
Spectral Properties of Non-self-adjoint Operators in the Semi-classical Regime
Journal of Differential Equations, 2001
We give a spectral description of the semi-classical Schrödinger operator with a piecewise linear, complex valued potential. Moreover, using these results, we show how an arbitrarily small bounded perturbation of a nonself-adjoint operator can completely change the spectrum of the operator.
Norm estimates for resolvents of non-selfadjoint operators having Hilbert-Schmidt inverse ones
2012
The paper is devoted to an invertible linear operator whose inverse is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator and imaginary Hermitian component is bounded. Numerous regular differential and integro-differential operators satisfy these conditions. A sharp norm estimate for the resolvent of the considered operator is established. It gives us estimates for the semigroup and so-called Hirsch operator functions. The operator logarithm and fractional powers are examples of Hirsch functions. In addition, we investigate spectrum perturbation and suggest the multiplicative representation for the resolvent of the considered operator.
A spectral multiplier theorem for non-self-adjoint operators
Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 2009
We prove a spectral multiplier theorem for non-self-adjoint operators. More precisely, we consider non-self-adjoint operators A : D(A) ⊂ L 2 → L 2 having numerical range in a sector Σ(w) of angle w, and whose heat kernel satisfies a Gaussian upper bound. We prove that for every bounded holomorphic function f on Σ(w), f(A) acts on L p with L p −norm estimated by the behavior of a finite number of derivatives of f on the boundary of Σ(w).
On the spectral behaviour of a non-self-adjoint operator with complex potential
Mathematical Physics, Analysis and Geometry, 2007
We consider the non-self-adjoint Anderson operator with a complex potential as a pseudo-ergodic operator in one spatial dimension and use second order numerical ranges to obtain tight bounds on the spectrum of the operator. We also find estimates for the size of possible holes contained in the spectrum of such an operator.

For a selfadjoint Schrödinger operator on the half line with a real-valued, integrable, and compactly-supported potential, it is investigated whether the boundary parameter at the origin and the potential can uniquely be determined by the scattering matrix or by the absolute value of the Jost function known at positive energies, without having the bound-state information. It is proved that, except in one special case where the scattering matrix has no bound states and its value is +1 at zero energy, the determination by the scattering matrix is unique. In the special case, it is shown that there are exactly two distinct sets consisting of a potential and a boundary parameter yielding the same scattering matrix, and a characterization of the nonuniqueness is provided. A reconstruction from the scattering matrix is outlined yielding all the corresponding potentials and boundary parameters. The concept of "eligible resonances" is introduced, and such resonances correspond to real-energy resonances that can be converted into bound states via a Darboux transformation without changing the compact support of the potential. It is proved that the determination of the boundary parameter and the potential by the absolute value of the Jost function is unique up to the inclusion of eligible resonances. Several equivalent characterizations are provided to determine whether a resonance is eligible or ineligible. A reconstruction from the absolute value of the Jost function is given, yielding all the corresponding potentials and boundary parameters. The results obtained are illustrated with various explicit examples.
Self-adjointness and spectrum of Stark operators on finite intervals
arXiv: Mathematical Physics, 2017
In this paper, we study self-adjointness and spectrum of operators of the form H=\displaystyle -\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+Fx, F>0 \quad\text{on} \quad \mathcal{H}=L^{2}(-L,L).$$ HHH is called Stark operator and describes a quantum particle in a quantum asymmetric well. Most of known results on mathematical physics does not take in consideration the self-adjointness and the operating domains of such operators. We focus on this point and give the parametrization of all self-adjoint extensions. This relates on self-adjoint domains of singular symmetric differential operators. For some of these extensions, we numerically, give the spectral properties of HHH. One of these examples performs the interesting phenomenon of splitting of degenerate eigenvalues. This is done using the a combination of the Bisection and Newton methods with a numerical accuracy less than 10−810^{-8}10−8.
