The Elton's article: Elron, R. (2023). Giftedness as Disorder: Examining the Dimensionality of the debate. International Journal of Learning and Development, 13(2), 38-48. https://doi.org/10.5296/ijld.v13i2.20939 has been but one of a long list of works aspiring to compare between "the two pole of human ability/intelligence/talent". These comparison trials are based on the "2 standard deviation criterion": while those having an intellectual disability are usually defined as having an IQ which is at least two standard deviations below the 100-norm, one of the most common definition of being gifted is having an IQ which is at least two standard deviations above 100. However, this criterion is not enough. The one main difference between these two groups is having – or suffering – from unrelated social circumstances clinical symptoms, that either make their social, emotional, financial and other independent integration in society difficult if not impossible, while this is not the case among the gifted. Indeed, there are emotional and social problems that many gifted individuals have to overcome, but as had been already shown a hundred years ago, in the Terman studies, and since then proven time and again, gifted children have – in general – better prospects that the non-gifted to blossom while materializing their abilities.
