Teachers’ salaries in the Helvetic Republic, c. 1800 (original) (raw)
Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the variations in teacher’s salaries across the Helvetic Republic, c. 1800. Using the Stapfer inquiry of 1799 as main source, this chapter examines how local political practices, economical issues and denominational affiliation affect the salary levels of teachers. In this chapter, I argue that the main influences, affecting a teacher’s salary, were: rural or urban areas, political background of the region, organizational structures of the school (like the election mode), economical issues (like the amount of the capital belonging to the school) and social structures (like to which school combination type a teacher belongs).
