The formation of the historical city texture of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, began during the Lusignan Period. St. Sophia Cathedral and St. Catherine Church, which have an important place in the formation of the texture, are two of the few works of art still surviving today. Being a period of destruction for the city, in general, The Venetian Period provided the city walls to Nicosia which still surround the historical texture. The Ottoman Period brought a change to the historical city texture and Islamic culture and Turkish Architectural construction style replaced the Christian cultures. A number of architectural works from this period, still existing within the walled city of Nicosia, provided a great contribution to the formation and development of the present day texture, as well as for its sustainability. The British Period is one which brought novelty to the city texture of Nicosia. With demolition of historical works and changes in the street and square dimensions, ...

Tarihi kent dokuları, eski uygarlıkların kamusal açık alanlarını, peyzajlarını ve geleneksel yaşam kültürlerini bünyesinde barındıran, günümüze taşıyan ve yaşatan yaşayan bir tarihtir. Kamusal açık alanları oluşturan meydanlar, insanların sosyal yaşamlarında önemli buluşma merkezleri olmuştur. Kent mobilyaları bu kamusal açık alanlarda kentin kimliğini yansıtan ve yaşam kalitesini artıran önemli unsurlardır. Kent mobilyaları, kültürel değerlerin tarihi kent dokularına yansımasını ve kullanılabilirliğini artırır. Lefkoşa'nın tarihi kent dokusunun yattığı Suriçi kent merkezi, Kıbrıs tarihindeki çeşitli uygarlıkların kültürel mirası ile oldukça zengin bir tarihi dokuya sahiptir. Sustainability, 2021
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations state that cities and human settlements need to be more inclusive, safe and resilient. In Europe cities have experienced dramatic physical, social and economic changes during the last decades while historic centres of European cities, among the most important assets of the European cultural heritage, are living paradoxes. They are defined as “a collection of beauty, icon of well-being, model of sustainability, but abandoned”. This study investigates the changes in the urban landscape of Nicosia, a particular historical centre in the Mediterranean region (Cyprus). The city centre is characterised by exceptionally well-preserved Venetian fortifications. Due to political circumstances, the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, is still divided and has been ruled by two different administrations for several decades. This study used optical multi-spectral satellite datasets processing, like the Landsat and the most recent Sentinel-2 pr...
NTRODUCTION Physiognomy is an important issue in the study of urban landscape. It greatly influences the inhabitants’ standard of living and their attitude to their own town or city. The appearance and the resulting atmosphere of a place also make a good or bad impression on investors. The problems of urban physiognomy are widely discussed in geographical studies. The aim of this article is to review the development of Polish geographical studies of the physiognomy of urban areas. The author describes the research conducted before World War II and after the War, in which physiognomy was studied along with land use and urban morphology. In the 1990s physiognomy again started to be treated as a separate, individual study area. This approach resulted from the changes in the appearance of Polish cities which took place during the transformation period. The article also presents the methods used to describe the changes in the appearance and the building state of repair, using the examples of Lodz and Tomaszów Mazowiecki city centres. Physiognomy is understood as the outside structure of the city, i.e. its general appearance, building forms, as well as the types of the building materials (Koter, 1974). Apart from the features of buildings, the author also considered elements connected with the building state of repair and the state of road surfaces and urban greenery (Leszczycki, 1932 b) ...
Historic Urban Landscape - A Conceptual Analysis
The notion of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) is a fairly new term, which seems to gain a growing significance in the debates of UNESCO, and, accordingly, in the hundreds of urban sites related to World Heritage Protection. In my paper, I propose a conceptual analysis of this term in the following four phases: (1) the place of the HUL in the development of notion of the World Heritage regarding the complex relationship between the tangible and the intangible heritage; (2) the birth of the notion of HUL itself and its importance; (3) a swift conceptual analysis of HUL as opposed to Historic Area based on the difference of the twin-notions of space and territory; (4) bridging the birth of the concept of (Historic) Urban Centre to that of the notion of HUL. Though the notion of HUL is universal, the examples of the paper will be taken from the European context.
THE TRANSITIONAL SPACE IN THE TRADITIONAL URBAN SETTLEMENT OF CYPRUS
The interactions between public and private, people and environment , open and closed ' inside and outside , and part and whole are important design criteria in traditional environments. This interaction and indissoluble whole of the fabric , transitional space , which is described as the overlapping of indoor and outdoor spaces , has great importance. In different cultures, transitional spaces have different names: arcade , engawa, vestibule, eiwan, and hayat. It is commonly named sündürme in Cyprus. Sündürme is the essential component that determines the spatial patterns and formal configurations in the traditional architecture of Cyprus. At the same time, it is the forthcoming transition device between traditional and contemporary environments of Cyprus. Through open and renewed interpretations, sündürme has the potential to be a cultural transition that can achieve continuity of traditional values and maintain physically and socially satisfying environments. Furthermore, any planning and designing strategy that considers the potential of sündürme in new housing developments as a shared image of all communities living on the island could contribute to the sociopolitical process. Under this scope, this study points out the cultural and architectural role of sündürme and describes its spatial, functional, and climatic characteristics by referring to the formal analysis results of 154 houses.1 The study aims to draw attention to the importance of sündürme in the development of living environments towards achieving better living conditions and a higher quality of living environments, while maintaining the spirit of the social and cultural lifestyles of the past and possibly integrating them with the requirements of our time.
