SOCIO-RELIGIOUS CONTRIBUTIONS OF SAYED MOHAMMAD RABEY HASANI NADWI: A STUDY

Maulana Sayed Mohammad Rabey Hasani Nadwi was a prominent Islamic scholar, writer, and social reformer in the 20th and early 21st-centuries. He was born in a highly-blessed and well-bred family on 29th October, 1929 AD/ 6th Jumada al- Awwal 1348 AH, at the village Takia Kalan of Raebareli District in the northern state, Uttar Pradesh, British India. Being a prolific writer and an expert in Islamic history and historiography, he promoted Islamic history as a means of bringing about revolution, socio-reform, and the development of the Arabic language, literature, and religious revival. Nadwi held significant positions in India and the Islamic world, particularly in the Arab world. He was the fourth president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), rector of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, and a founding member of the "Rabita Alam-e-Islami" Mecca Mukarramah. Moreover, Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadwi has always taken an active interest in the promotion of Muslim organizations and Islamic institutions and has served in various capacities that are widely acknowledged. In this paper, we have tried to highlight the socio-religious aspects of Maulana Sayed Mohammad Rabey Hasani al-Nadwi through the light of valuable writings.

It is available here: https://curate.nd.edu/show/jd472v26639 Abstract: Da‘wa is a classical Islamic concept which has been dramatically re-appropriated in modern times across the Muslim world. This dissertation explores the modern resurgence of da‘wa – “inviting” to Islam, or Islamic missionary activity – through the lens of inter-religious relations, and within the two horizons Islamic history and modernity. It demonstrates, first, the close relationship that has existed between da‘wa and inter-religious relations both in the past and in the modern period. Second, it sheds light on the diversity of da‘wa in the midst of other religions by tracing two broad styles of da‘wa throughout Islamic history: “bottom-up” and “top-down” da‘wa. Finally, it argues that Muslim communities in colonial and post-colonial India shed light on these themes with particular clarity. Indian Muslims, this dissertation suggests, have made pioneering contributions to global da‘wa, particularly with respect to their development of bottom-up styles of da‘wa and what this dissertation calls “da‘wa modernities.” These arguments are developed in two parts. Part I provides an examination of da‘wa in relation to other religions from the Qur’an to the modern period. Since few studies have examined Islamic history through these lenses, this represents a major contribution in its own right. Building on Part I, Part II analyzes two prominent Sunni da‘wa organizations to emerge from the Indian subcontinent in the past century: the Tablīghī Jamā‘at (TJ) and the Islamic Research Foundation of Dr. Zakir Naik (IRF). By investigating and juxtaposing the lineages, formative histories and inter-religious discourses of these movements and their founders, Part II elucidates both the unique contributions Indian Muslims have made to modern da‘wa, and the diversity of Indian da‘wa. In response to the political, social and inter-religious challenges they have faced in modern India, and through their fresh engagement with Islamic scripture and tradition, these movements have developed related, though distinct, bottom-¬up styles of da‘wa and da‘wa modernities which have proven to be globally relevant. This dissertation thus makes a significant contribution to the study of da‘wa in general and to the study of the Tablīghī Jamā‘at. It also provides the first major scholarly study of Zakir Naik.

SAYYID AHMED KHAN'S (1817 CE-1898 CE) MODERN APPROACH TOWARDS SOME PRINCIPLE CONCEPTS OF ISLAM: A SHORT DISCUSSION

Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817 CE-1898 CE) was a Muslim academician and social activist on Islamic thought. His academic and social activities made him a unique Muslim figure and pioneer Islamic modernist and reformist during the 19th century in India. This paper analyzes Sayyed Ahmed Khan's (1817 CE-1898 CE) modern approach towards some principle concepts of Islam. This study also focused on the views of Khan on Ijtihad, Jihad and the essential sources of Islamic knowledge. The qualitative method is used to do text analysis from his writings and academic and social contribution to comprehend how he compared and came up with solutions affected by Western thought. This study has found that his Islamic beliefs are relevant to modern concepts representing Islam as a moderate, progressive and dynamic religion for solving 19th-century challenges. Finally, his approach brought Islam and modernity together in the 19th century, which inspired Indian Muslims to emerge from Islamic power against Western civilization.

South Asia’s encounter with Western colonialism preceded that of the Arab world, arguably rendering it more sensitive to the intellectual challenges implicit in political subjugation. Consequently, scholars of South Asian Islam, such as Francis Robinson, have highlighted its role historically more as an exporter than as an importer of reformist ideas, particularly during the decades of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The subject of this book, Shaykh Abu al-Hasan Ali Nadwi (1915–99), exemplifies both these tendencies through his life and works. First, he confronts head-on the challenges posed to Muslim civilization by Western cultural and political hegemony. Second, through a corpus of eloquent and passionate Arabic publications and frequent lecture tours abroad, he speaks to the trauma of a post-colonial Arab world still reeling with the shock of its inglorious place in the new global political order. This study attempts at analysing Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi’s suggestions towards a revival of Islamic civilization as an alternative to the Western civilization. It is based on library research and is qualitative in nature as it basically focuses on textual analysis. Moreover, the major approaches are descriptive, analytical and evaluative. This study found that Nadwi believed in the capacities of Islamic civilization to be revived if the existing challenges are overcome. For him, despite its tremendous breakthroughs in the fields of science and technology, Western civilization is bound to fail due to its moral decline. Therefore, it is only an Islamic civilization which is overtaken by the Western civilization should lead the humanity. In light of his argument, this study explores the strategies provided by Nadwi for the development of Muslim society as a revival of Islamic civilization.
