Environmental Perception of the Housewives in the Communities of the Alta Sierra Tarahumara, Chihuahua, Mexico

In order to explore the perceptions of housewives who live in rural communities with large indigenous populations, a study was conducted in a community of the Sierra Madre of Chihuahua, northern Mexico, an area with a high level of marginalization. One hundred and twelve structured interviews were conducted based on a questionnaire that included such aspects as: socio-economic profile, background and basic knowledge about the environment, environmental issues, impacts of economic activities and priority issues for information and training. It was found that the ethnic, age, educational level and status of mothers, are important variables that influence how the environment is perceived. The depletion of vital resources (water and oxygen) is perceived as the most important impact of the overexploitation of natural resources; the Mestizo women showed a greater knowledge of the environment as compared the Indigenous ones.

Human behaviour patterns of a welfare house inhabitant as an adaptative action in a humid hot weather. Case Colima-Villa de Álvarez conurbation, México

In Mexico, increased production housing is social housing or a welfare house. It is essential to know the population sector for those builds, as contrary to reason, It is designed and constructed without taking account the needs, requirements and conditions of minimum comfort for the person to falls under the performance-friendly environments of their activities. The objective of this research is to analyze the interaction generated between the inhabitants of the house and the window. It aims to analyze environmental conditions generated by the window in a common area such as the living room for a week in the two major climatic periods for the city of Colima, the warm humid covering June to October and warm dry covering November to May. The type of study is an exploratory design research, not experimental type. So far the results show a diversity of behaviours consistent with the climatic-environmental conditions such as keeping doors and windows open throughout the day, barefoot in the house, change the dress of light to very light inside the house, take over a bath at day and taking naps at noon. Also we can find extreme adaptative behaviours, as sleeping at the backyard, taking baths at the pile (a recipient where is saved water for cloths washing) and sleep at the living room. This actions show the inefficiency that exist between the envelope and the outside climate and between the outside-inside weather being controlled by the envelope.

Study of Green Behavior with a Focus on Mexican Individuals

2009

Studies of green behavior have awakened a growing interest, since the accelerated environmental degradation is partly attributed to a lack of such behavior. However it is not an easy task to modify consumer habits and influence the behavior of individuals. This paper summarizes variables extracted from four models of green behavior in five core groups: orientation man-nature, perceived control, ecological knowledge, personal consequences and environmental consequences, with a special focus on the Mexican individuals as an example of application of environmental marketing strategies. Analysis shows that in spite of efforts done in environmental management in Mexico, one of the 12 environmentally megadiverse country of the world, there is a big gap between official programs to protect environment and social participation. In the particular case of Mexico, it is recommended to relate environmental issues to survival process, in order to apply efficient environmental marketing strategies.

Habitability, Resilience, and Satisfaction in Mexican Homes to COVID-19 Pandemic

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health

Following the 2020 confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, housing has become the only safe place and this has exposed inequity in habitability. This research on the reality of confined households and the perception of their homes in the Mexican republic is based on a mixed participatory study, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The online questionnaire consisted of 58 questions in the quantitative approximation. The qualitative part required the provision of an image of the workspace, with testimonies and personal reflections. During the lockdown, all participants saw an increase in overall energy consumption; more than half reported not being in thermal comfort; and a third declared deficiencies in noise insulation. Regarding the perception of the telework/tele-study space, we found the following categories: bedrooms, living/dining rooms, studies and others. In addition, respondents had often adapted the workspace for both individual and shared use. In general, t...

The In-Home Environment and Household Health: A Cross-Sectional Study of Informal Urban Settlements in Northern México

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2005

People living in poverty make up nearly half of the global population and a large proportion of these individuals inhabit cities, living in informal settlements. However, only limited research on in-home environmental exposures and the associated health effects in these communities is available. This research investigates the home environment in unplanned settlements of a rapidly growing city on the U.S.-México border and its impact on the health of households with children under 12 years of age. A cross-sectional design was used to assess household exposures and health outcomes at the household level. A total of 202 households were selected from two informal settlements in the peri-urban region of Ciudad Juárez, México. The following variables were significantly associated with the report of at least one household member experiencing a health outcome in a two week period. Allergies were positively associated with insecticide use inside the home (adjusted Relative Odds (RO), 2.71; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.2-6.3). Respiratory problems were associated with households using a wood burning stove vs. a gas stove (adjusted RO, 5.64; 95% CI, 1.1-27.9). Diarrhea was negatively associated with presence of a flush toilet in the home (adjusted RO, 0.22; 95% CI,0.1-0.6). Finally, eye irritations were positively associated with indoor tobacco smoke (adjusted RO, 2.23; 95% CI, 1.1-4.5). This research highlights exposures associated with poor living conditions in informal settlements and their associations with detrimental effects on health. More efforts should be made to understand the dynamics of poor urban environments including the health effects of exposures linked with poor housing conditions.
