Perceptions of Teledentistry among Dental Professionals in Saudi Arabia

Aim: Thepresent cross-sectional study was conducted among dental professionals to know the knowledge and awareness levels regarding teledentistry. Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out on the sample size of 226dental professionals (Males 154 & Females 72) in College of Dentistry, King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia, to know the awareness of teledentistry among dental professionals.The questionnaire consists of two main parts: Part 1 includes sociodemographic information of the participants (age and gender), part 2 is related to the dental professionals' knowledge of telemedicine (ten items). The survey data was collected and organized into Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (Microsoft Inc., USA), and was statistically analyzedutilizing the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.0 software (IBM Inc., USA). The statistical test used here was the chi-square test and P values less than 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). Results: When dental professionals were asked about whether they heard about teledentistry, their 33% were said yes and majority said no, a comparative between male and female regarding question were statistically significant. When they asked about the meaning of teledentistry: 29% said through telephone and 71% said through media. 54% of the study participant said they are willing to practice teledentistry in future. 48% of participants agreed that teledentistry can really help in health education of masses, only 29% were not agreed with it. Teledentistry Awareness and Knowledge Among Dental Practitioners and Patients in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Studies show that Teledentistry helps enhance communication between dental peers and patients and improves time management and education. The knowledge and awareness of Teledentistry levels need to be measured for a wider adaption. This study aimed to explore the knowledge and awareness of Teledentistry among dental practitioners and patients who live in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia. Patients and Methods: This study is a descriptive cross-sectional study with two participant groups. It uses five-point Likert-type quantitative, valid, and reliable questionnaires, one for dental providers and one for patients. The providers' questionnaire covers four domains: (1) Teledentistry system effectiveness to improve practice, (2) Teledentistry system usefulness for the dental practice, (3) Teledentistry system usefulness for patients, and (4) Concerns about confidentiality and security of Teledentistry. The patients' questionnaire covers two domains: (1) Patients who have previous experience in Teledentistry and (2) Patients who did not have previous experience in Teledentistry. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved this study and distributed it at teaching, governmental hospitals, and private dental clinics. Convenience and snowball sampling were used to collect responses. All consent forms have been collected from the participants. Results: A total of 512 responses were collected using Google Forms, 203 from the dental healthcare provider and 309 from the patients. The collected data were coded and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. More than 60% of dentists believe in the worth of Teledentistry, which helps patient education, monitors patients' conditions, and improves the services provided to patients in remote areas. Also, more than 70% of patients believe that Teledentistry can significantly save time and money, and more than half wish that Teledentistry be applied to all hospitals. Conclusion: Dentists and patients generally showed optimism and support for the Teledentistry concept, in addition to how Teledentistry can be beneficial for both dentists and patients.

Knowledge and attitude of dental students towards teledentistry {Original Research Article}

Background: Teledentistry is a relatively new branch of dentistry that is quickly gaining traction. Teledentistry is the practice of providing dental care using information technology and telecommunications. The purpose of this study was to assess third-, fourth-, intern-, and postgraduate dental students' knowledge and attitudes about teledentistry. Materials and Methods: Third year, fourth-year, interns and postgraduate dental students participated in the cross-sectional study. A questionnaire with 26 questions was used to assess knowledge and attitude regarding teledentistry. SPSS version 23 was used to perform descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests on the data. A p-value < 0.05 was used to evaluate statistical significance. Results: A total of 267 students took part, with 219 (82 percent) of them are females and 48 are males (18 percent). Female dental students had more knowledge and a more positive attitude toward teledentistry than male dental students, while fourth-year dental students had more knowledge, followed by interns, third-year dental students, and postgraduate dental students. Conclusion: The findings revealed that dental students have been educated about teledentistry and have a positive attitude towards it, and that continuous dental education and training programmes are required to give knowledge and enhance attitudes toward teledentistry.

Teledentistry as a Supportive Tool for Dentists in Pakistan

The current scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced dentists to seek different options for delivering healthcare services other than the in-person direct examination in clinical practice. Teledentistry is one of the options for remote patient care and monitoring. Objective. The present survey was conducted to assess the knowledge and perception of the dentists in Pakistan regarding teledentistry as an emergent supportive tool. Materials and Methods. A self-administered, close-ended, and prevalidated survey questionnaire was used, comprising 21 questions, and distributed electronically via e-mail, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger to evaluate the knowledge and perception of dentists regarding teledentistry. The application of teledentistry for Saudi patients' care: A national survey study

Background/purpose: Teledentistry has emerged as a new communication tool in various dental disciplines around the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability and reliability of teledentistry in the field of diagnostic dentistry and explore the perception of Saudi dentists of its benefits and concerns. Materials and methods: An electronic survey with 40 questions was developed, validated and distributed electronically by email and social media channels to dentists from different specialty in Saudi Arabia. Collected data were analyzed for statistical significance. Results: A total of 148 dentists completed the survey. The current data demonstrated that 50% of study participants have had applied teledentistry in their clinical practice. Out of all, 90% have computers in their dental offices and 72% have been using electronic medical records in which radiographs and clinical images are uploaded. Most participants had smart phones (91%), in which they were used more commonly (74.3%) than conventional cameras (54.1%) to capture and share patients' clinical images over communication applications (74.3%) and less likely through emails (62.2%). Overall, 83% were confident that teledentistry can improve daily dental practice, specifically in the fields of oral radiology followed by endodontics and oral medicine. Conclusion: Teledentistry is an emerging tool with potential to improve the delivery of diagnostic dental care for communities with limited or no access to dental specialists.
