Online Counseling “The World Without a Label” (original) (raw)

Slovenian practice story: 10 years of e-counselling service for teenagers

Studies in health technology and informatics

Online counselling represents a new medium for finding health information. The aim of the research is to determine the importance of analysis of adolescents' issues in order to understand their problems, needs and desires. Methods: In 2012 the system for the classification of questions by the type of problem was introduced. In relation to the contents the questions were first sorted to the parent category then followed by the categorization according to the subject matter. The calculation comprised the portions, averages and quartiles, and in some cases even Cramer's V coefficients. The analysis covered the entire defined population (3,257 coded questions). Results: Most of the users are girls (76 %), the most representative group encompasses adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years (57 %). Most questions were grouped into the categories Sexuality and sexual health (24 %), Relationships (23 %) and Body (20 %). The length of posts increases with the age of the user (Cr's V = 0.18), but differs by the gender (a higher proportion of longer questions (Cr's V = 0.15) were posted by girls) and the themes (Cr's V = 0.31). Discussion and conclusion: The categorizing of questions is suitable for the identification and analysis of adolescents' problems, needs and desires. Regular categorisation of questions with analysis will serve as a useful research tool for youth work.

“Action Counseling” Intervention for Families in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2015

The Bosnian War was one of the most destructive wars to civilian populations in the history of humanity. Bosnia-Herzegovina has been referred to as a "spectre of a lost future" (Kurtovic, 2014). Associazione Fabio Vita nel Mondo ONLUS (AFVM) is an Italian organization that has been carrying out humanitarian operations since 2003. It is fighting hard to eliminate that "sp ectre". This paper reports the successful counseling work of the Associazione Fabio Vita nel Mondo in Konijc, (Bosnia-Herzegovina) which has prevented many children from going to orphanages. Both trained volunteers and professional counselors assist families. At this time all of the families in the program have been able to keep their children. Further expansion of the program is necessary to encompass other areas of Bosnia-Herzegovina and a larger team of local social workers should be developed.

PSYCHOTHERAPY IN INTERNET-AGE SOCIETY

The article regards a number of challenges for psychotherapy, posed by the dynamic development of the Internet and changes in the functioning of individuals and societies related to this. The author analyses the social role of psychotherapy — its tasks, the needs it fulfils, and the expectations it tries to meet. Subsequently, he refers to cultural changes related to the communication revolution, and points at areas which will require special attention in the coming years, so that psychotherapists are able to adjust their methods to a developing environment. In the light of contemporary research, the Internet appears to be both a source of danger to mental health, but equally — a space for utilizing new methods of help. Making use of these possibilities, as the author claims, goes far beyond remote psychotherapy. It requires something more from help providers: understanding and considering the new types of human relationships which develop in communication facilitated by new media.

Psycho-social Aspects of Trauma and its Transmission in Post-War Bosnia-Herzegovina

Edkins's examples and comparisons which she cites in her explanation of the trauma also link to violence against the women. Authoress states that trauma happens when people who are closest to us betray us. There are several questions which she brings up in order to explain the term trauma such as: What is trauma? How does it happen? Are human beings subject to political trauma in everyday situation? How can we cope and overcome trauma? How can we live with the fact that we have experienced trauma in certain period of our life? Based on Edkins's trauma definition the purpose of this paper is to analyze psycho-social aspects of trauma and its transmission in post war Bosnia-Herzegovina.

THE POSTURE OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE VICTIMS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA DURING THE WAR

Sexual violence within the context of armed conflict is not a recent phenomenon. It has existed for as long as conflict has existed. According to international law, Bosnia and Herzegovina must compensate victims of sexual violence during war, thereby mitigating the effects of such war crimes. However, Bosnia and Herzegovina's failure to effectively implement reparations for victims of wartime sexual violence has a negative impact on their status. The Bosnia and Herzegovina reparation system are ineffective for a number of reasons, the foremost of which is the lack of a single legal structure that governs the victims' right to reparation in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which is why object laws govern their rights. However, the laws of the bodies that govern this matter vary greatly, starting with the recognition of the condition of victims of sexual assault during armed conflict as a distinct category of noncombatant victims of armed conflict, the requirements for requesting the privilege to reparation, and the categories of rights they may exercise. The main aim of this paper is to analyze sexual violence in an ongoing war. The qualitative research methodology has been used in the following article.

Tratamientos psicológicos para la depresión aplicados a través de Internet y con el apoyo de un clínico: Una actualización

Revista de Psicopatología y Psicología Clínica, 2015

Guided internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) has been tested in many trials since the early studies dating back to the late 1990's. The aim of this review was to investigate the most recent literature on guided ICBT for depression. We identified 11 controlled studies published between January 2013 and September 2014. Overall, large treatment effects were observed with a few exceptions. A majority (7 studies) provided some information regarding unwanted effects such as deterioration. Three studies directly compared guided ICBT against face-to-face CBT. We added an earlier study and calculated meta-analytic summary statistics for the four studies involving a total of 336 participants. The average effect size difference was Hedges g = 0.12 (95% CI: -0.08~0.32) in the direction of favouring guided ICBT, but with no practical importance. We conclude that guided ICBT is a promising treatment for depression and mood disorders and that the research is rapidly expanding.

Real Life Trauma in the Virtual World

The emergence of the internet and social media is changing the lives of people everywhere. This thesis explores the fluidity of offline and online contexts in the lives of adolescents, arguably known as digital natives, growing up in a digital age. Through the theoretical lens of Erving Goffman and Judith Butler, the idea that offline and online contexts are fluid and play a meaningful role in the identity construction and social interaction of modern adolescents is presented. On the basis of this argument, the impact of cyberbullying and privacy violations is explored. Utilizing the published literature available on the impact of cyberbullying, privacy violations, and trauma, there is a gap in the research linking negative online experiences to trauma. This is due to the restrictive nature of Criterion A in the diagnostic criteria of posttraumatic stress disorder. This thesis proposes that there is evidence to support the argument that a broader conception of trauma is needed in order to account for all events that may lead to trauma, both offline and online.
