Effect of ERP Implementation on Organisational Performance: Manager's Dilemma (original) (raw)

Benefits and Process Improvements for ERP Implementation: Results from an Exploratory Case Study

This exploratory qualitative single case study discusses the benefits and process improvements pertinent to enterprise resource and planning (ERP) projects. The study was conducted in a Canadian case organization in the oil and gas industry that includes twenty participants from four project role groups of senior leaders, project managers, project team members, and business users. The results of the study revealed twenty-two key benefits and four process improvements from which organizations can draw value while planning for ERP projects. The top six benefits include: standardization of common business processes, single integrated system, standardized reporting, improved key performance indicators (KPI), all countries in one system, and easy access to data. Knowing and maximizing these key benefits may prove beneficial for organizations, while planning for major investments in ERP systems.

Understanding the Business Benefits of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems

2002

This paper describes research in progress. The research aims to provide a deep understanding and explanation of the business benefits of ERP systems as they evolve during the post implementation period. The relationship of the research within the ERP literature is explained. The research design is outlined including the theoretical basis of the research. Finally some preliminary findings are presented and the current status of the research is reported.

A comprehensive framework for classifying the benefits of ERP systems

… Conference on Information Systems, 2000

This paper presents a framework for assessing the business benefits of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. After analyzing the features of ERP systems, the literature on IT benefits, data from 233 ERP-vendor success stories published on the web, and interviews with 34 ERP cases, we have produced a consolidated framework of five benefit dimensions. This framework tries to classify the types of benefit that organizations can achieve by using ERP systems and provide a comprehensive foundation for planning, justifying, and managing the system. The framework focuses on benefits only, from the point of view of management as stakeholders; it does not consider costs.

Lessons Learned During a Decade of ERP Experience

International Journal of Enterprise Information Systems, 2000

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) literature concentrates on critical success factors for implementation. More recently, published work relates to ERP maintenance and upgrade practices. In papers concerning all phases of the ERP lifecycle, researchers commonly gather material via case studies of organizations comparatively new to ERP implementation, maintenance, or upgrade projects. This article uses a literature review detailing critical success factors and best practices during all phases of the ERP lifecycle to frame a case study on a large company with a decade of experience in supporting an ERP system through implementation, two major upgrades, one major domestic business merger, and two international business acquisitions. This article catalogs the company's departures and concurrences with the published best practices and success factors over time, as well as the positive and negative consequences of its decisions. The company's experience shows that straying from generally accepted best practices can lead to a successful outcome, and that portraying some success factors too well can exacerbate problems in other areas.

ERP Systems and Its Impacts on the Business Operations

This study seeks to explain the benefits and challenges of ERP systems and primarily uses the secondary sources. It is based on the analysis of published information, articles, books, and journals drawn from both online and physical libraries. The ERP (enterprise resource planning) system is a software application, leveraged by different organizations in the resource management and planning. These are entirely integrated management components that cover broad functional areas such as human resources, accounting, production, finance, and logistics. ERP systems have evolved over an extended period from seemingly crude information technology processes to more refined and sophisticated procedures with immense ability to offer answers to various management problems faced by organizations. ERP tools are great assets when implemented or adopted by a firm. The benefits that come with the application of ERP supersede the challenges they face. For example, executing ERP software into the organization's information management system reduces the cost of management, streamlines processes, and introduces the aspect of scalability, collaboration, and efficiency.

For this purpose case study is done by selecting some organizations, which have implemented these ERP packages. The main research objective is to identify the factors which contribute towards effectiveness of ERP and its application to enhance the...

Organizational performance effects of ERP systems usage: The impact of post-implementation changes

International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, 2006

This paper examines the long-term financial performance effects of ERP system changes/revisions for firms that have previously reported ERP adoptions. The study is motivated by the mixed results of recent studies examining the financial effects of ERP systems and by studies which demonstrate that ERP implementations are modular in nature and thus may yield organizational performance gains or losses as a result of discrete changes that might be initiated after the initial system implementation. This study empirically examines the extent to which discrete changes to ERP systems over a post-implementation time-frame impact on firms' ability to deliver long-run financial performance. It further examines whether the timing and nature of system transformation during the post-implementation period presents a significant moderating condition of ERP performance outcomes. We specifically consider the ERP-adopting firms previously examined by Nicolaou . Firm performance effects in relation to the implementation and use of enterprise resource planning systems. Journal of Information Systems 18 (Fall): 79-105] and track them for changes/revisions in the form of enhancements, upgrades, abandonments and switches during the post-implementation period. Two research hypotheses are developed in the study which posit that both the nature and the timing of system implementation changes represent significant conditions for ERP post-implementation success.
