Analysis of railway systems applying complex networks: the case of Mexican Railway system
Ingeniería Investigación y Tecnología
At the 2014 International Transport Forum, it was established that ports, border crossings and key industrial centers in Mexico are well connected. Under this premise, the Mexican rail network was analyzed applying the complex networks approach; through the corresponding performance measures, the relevance of the stations was determined; then the robustness against targeted attacks and against random failures was analyzed. The degree follows an exponential probability distribution; it was identified a set of nodes that controls 19% of the shortest routes; two cities are included in the set; five points are closest to the rest of nodes; the same two cities are also included in the set. Through the closeness centrality we observed that in the Mexican network the distance between the stations shows low variability. The network is sensitive attacks directed to the nodes with the highest betweenness value; the number of components increases faster compared to random failures. This work i...
Statistical Analysis of the Indian Railway Network: A Complex Network Approach
2011
In this paper, we study the Indian Railway Network (IRN) as a weighted complex network in which railway stations are considered as the nodes, while the weights on edges represent the number of trains directly linking two stations. Apart from the small-world characteristics and exponential distributions of node-degrees and edge-weights in the IRN, we explore the correlations of the amount of traffic with the topology of the network. The traffic in the IRN is found to be accumulated on interconnected groups of stations and is concentrated in the links between large stations. We also identify the most important stations in the IRN with respect to connectivity and traffic-flow, which help to identify some of the probable points (and regions) of congestion in the network. The study indicates several guidelines to improve the performance of the IRN.
Application of complex network theory in identifying critical elements of CRH2 train system
Smart and Resilient Transport
Purpose Based on complex network theory, a method for critical elements identification of China Railway High-speed 2 (CRH2) train system is introduced in this paper. Design/methodology/approach First, two methods, reliability theory and complex theory, are introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages for their application in identifying critical elements of high-speed train system are summarized. Second, a multi-layer multi-granularity network model including virtual and actual nodes is proposed, and the corresponding fusion rules for the same nodes in different layers are given. Findings Finally, taking CRH2 train system as an example, the critical elements are identified by using complex network theory, which provides a reference for train operation and maintenance. Originality/value A method of identifying key elements of CRH2 train system based on integrated importance indices is introduced, which is a meaningful extension of the application of complex network theory to iden...

Cyber-physical-social connectivity is a key element in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) due to the ever-increasing interaction between human users and technological systems. Such connectivity translates the ITSs into dynamical systems of socio-technical nature. Exploiting this socio-technical feature to our advantage, we propose a cyber-attack detection scheme for ITSs that focuses on cyberattacks on freeway traffic infrastructure. The proposed scheme combines two parallel macroscopic traffic model-based Partial Differential Equation (PDE) filters whose output residuals are compared to make decision on attack occurrences. One of the filters utilizes physical (vehicle/infrastructure) sensor data as feedback whereas the other utilizes social data from human users’ mobile devices as feedback. The Social Data-based Filter is aided by a fake data isolator and a social signal processor that translates the social information into usable feedback signals. Mathematical convergence p...
Trajectory data analysis using complex networks
2011
A massive amount of data on moving object trajectories is available today. However, it is still a major challenge to process such information in order to explain moving object interactions, which could help in revealing non-trivial behavioral patterns. To that end, we consider a complex networks-based representation of trajectory data. Frequent encounters among moving objects (trajectory encounters) are used to
Reasoning about the disruption patterns for train system using Bayesian Network and Prolog
We construct a Prolog-based expert system to reason about the disruption patterns for train system using Bayesian network and Prolog. The disruptions dependencies are modeled using Bayesian network and the reasoning is carried on using Prolog. We choose Bayesian network because it is one of the most efficient and elegant framework to represent and reason probabilistic graphical model. The causative relationship among disruptions is represented using Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). We use Prolog to improve the efficiency of the reasoning process by defining Bayesian network and its probabilistic information into a knowledge base. The causative relationships among disruptions are also modeled in terms of Prolog rules. Our Prolog-based expert system combines the statistical reasoning capability of Bayesian network and logic programming efficiency. The system provides comprehensive reasoning regarding the causative probability of events, the causative relationship among disruptions, as well as the most triggering and triggered disruptions in train system.
Successful network inference from time-series data using mutual information rate
This work uses an information-based methodology to infer the connectivity of complex systems from observed time-series data. We first derive analytically an expression for the Mutual Information Rate (MIR), namely, the amount of information exchanged per unit of time, that can be used to estimate the MIR between two finite-length low-resolution noisy time-series, and then apply it after a proper normalization for the identification of the connectivity structure of small networks of interacting dynamical systems. In particular, we show that our methodology successfully infers the connectivity for heterogeneous networks, different time-series lengths or coupling strengths, and even in the presence of additive noise. Finally, we show that our methodology based on MIR successfully infers the connectivity of networks composed of nodes with different time-scale dynamics, where inference based on Mutual Information fails.
Graph-based ahead monitoring of vulnerabilities in large dynamic transportation networks
PLoS ONE, 2021
Betweenness Centrality (BC) has proven to be a fundamental metric in many domains to identify the components (nodes) of a system modelled as a graph that are mostly traversed by information flows thus being critical to the proper functioning of the system itself. In the transportation domain, the metric has been mainly adopted to discover topological bottlenecks of the physical infrastructure composed of roads or railways. The adoption of this metric to study the evolution of transportation networks that take into account also the dynamic conditions of traffic is in its infancy mainly due to the high computation time needed to compute BC in large dynamic graphs. This paper explores the adoption of dynamic BC, i.e., BC computed on dynamic large-scale graphs, modeling road networks and the related vehicular traffic, and proposes the adoption of a fast algorithm for ahead monitoring of transportation networks by computing approximated BC values under time constraints. The experimental ...
Urban Road Transport Network Analysis: Machine Learning and Social Network Approaches
Communications - Scientific letters of the University of Zilina
Traffic congestion is one of the most significant problems in urban transportation. It has been increasing, especially in regions close to intersections. Several methods have been developed to reduce the traffic congestion. One of the analysis methods is social network analysis (SNA). This method, which has increased use in transportation, can quickly identify the most central intersections in transportation networks. Improvements to central intersections, identified in a road network structure, speed up the traffic flow across the entire network structure. In this study, the Istanbul highway transportation network has been examined and values for a series of network centrality measures have been calculated using the SNA. The accuracy and error scales of the centrality values were compared using a machine learning algorithm. The Bonacich power centrality has been the best performance. Based on the study results the most central intersections in Istanbul have been determined.
A Novel Anomaly Detection System on the Internet of Railways Using Extended Neural Networks
Electronics
The Internet of Railways (IoR) network is made up of a variety of sensors, actuators, network layers, and communication systems that work together to build a railway system. The IoR’s success depends on effective communication. A network of railways uses a variety of protocols to share and transmit information amongst each other. Because of the widespread usage of wireless technology on trains, the entire system is susceptible to hacks. These hacks could lead to harmful behavior on the Internet of Railways if they spread sensitive data to an infected network or a fake user. For the previous few years, spotting IoR attacks has been incredibly challenging. To detect malicious intrusions, models based on machine learning and deep learning must still contend with the problem of selecting features. k-means clustering has been used for feature scoring and ranking because of this. To categorize attacks in two datasets, the Internet of Railways and the University of New South Wales, we empl...
