Response of peanut genotypes to mid-season moisture stress: phenological, morpho-physiological, and yield traits

Nine peanut genotypes were evaluated in two seasons under irrigated and simulated mid-season drought conditions to investigate the influence of water stress on some phenological, morpho-physiological, and yield traits. Analysis of variance revealed significant genotypic differences for all the traits studied. Water saturation deficit and epicuticular wax load increased in response to water stress and age of the crop, while specific leaf area decreased with water stress and age of the crop. In general, correlations of water saturation deficit (WSD), epicuticular wax load (EWL), and specific leaf area (SLA) with yield traits were fairly weak. WSD in the early stage under irrigated conditions was found to be positively associated with pod yield under water stress; EWL in the early stage was negatively associated with harvest index (HI) under stress. ABSTRACTThe Virginia–Carolina region is the most important peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production region for the large‐seeded, virginia‐type peanut in the United States, but 85% of the production is rainfed and predisposed to water deficit stress. The mechanisms virginia‐type peanut uses in response to drought stress are poorly understood. We evaluated several physiological and metabolic characteristics and their relationship with pod yield in eight virginia‐type cultivars and advanced breeding lines in rainfed and irrigated field trials in 2011 and 2012. Effect of water stress on yield and agronomic characters of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Peanut production in Thailand is concentrated in upland area under rain-fed conditions. Unpredictable time and the extent of water deficit occurs every year and causes a reduction in yield and quality. Under these conditions the use of cultivars tolerant to drought and producing high yield should be advantageous. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of water stress on yield and agronomic characters of peanut cultivars. A glasshouse experiment was conducted for evaluation of 4 peanut cultivars, Tainan 9, Khon Kaen 60-3, ICGV 98308 and ICGV 98324, under three regimes of water (field capacity, 1/2 available water and 1/4 available water) in earthen pots. A 4×3 factorial experiment in randomized complete block design with 4 replications was conducted.
