Boundless Classrooms and Touchless Bodies: Teaching Physical Education Online

This qualitative study explored the PE teachers' experiences in teaching online during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. Using the phenomenological approach, it investigated the pedagogical practices, the educational theories that guided the participants, and their reflections on teaching PE online. In order to describe the PE teachers' pedagogical practices and perspectives regarding online teaching, the following research questions guided the study: (1) What are the daily instructional practices of the participating online PE teachers? (2) What educational theories guided these participants in teaching online? and (3) What are the reflections of the participants in teaching PE online? Data collection methods for this qualitative study included: 1) interviews with online PE teachers; 2) virtual classroom observations and field notes; and 3) text messaging and e-mail communications between the researcher and the participants. Content and thematic analyses were used to interpret the results of the study. Results showed that teachers provided demonstration classes and allowed students to be creative in submitting their outputs. They practiced differentiated instruction, challenged the creativity of students, and developed innovative ways of teaching PE online. They implicitly ascribed to Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory and Bandura's Social Learning Theory. The results of this study supported the premise that college PE can be taught online and is workable during the pandemic.

CHARACTERIZING THE EFFECTIVTY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS IN AN ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Teaching physical education in an online environment is a challenge that can turn into an opportunity. This investigation aims to characterize how effective physical education teachers are in implementing online learning and teaching environments during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic. A content analysis was used to describe the characterization of students to teachers. The comments section of the faculty evaluation system of the university was used as a secondary source. Thematic analysis was employed to capture the students' common ideas in the comment section. Physical education teachers were characterized as having clarity of explanation for the safe and correct execution of movement activities, effective facilitators of online learning environments, and developers of a habit of lifelong health. Further, teachers display in-depth knowledge about physical education; display movement competencies, effective feedbacking, open communicator, and enabling character emerged as the emergent themes.

Teaching physical education teacher education (PETE) online: Challenges and solutions

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for physical education teacher education (PETE), and PETE appears to suffer the most when transitioning from face-to- face to virtual (online) environments due to the characteristics of PE. There is no literature found to address the profound challenges and solutions for teaching PETE online that we so desperately need nowadays. The present study examined specific challenges and solutions for online PETE. Future research directions are provided.

The Success and Struggles of Physical Education Teachers While Teaching Online During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The purpose of this study was to investigate physical education teachers’ perceptions of implementing online physical education during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as to explore their needs with regard to support for future teaching experiences. A total of 4,302 teachers completed four open-ended questions as part of a larger survey. Deductive and inductive qualitative analysis led to three themes: (a) Teachers’ Proud Moments, (b) Help! So Many Obstacles, and (c) Future Challenges. Teachers stated many successes and challenges that they experienced through the COVID-19 pandemic. Many items specifically focused on use and access to technology, student participation, and meeting students’ needs in various ways. Results can provide guidance for how to address the essential components of physical education in the online environment. In addition, results may provide insight to those who educate, train, and prepare teachers to teach in a virtual and/or physically distanced environment.

Back to in-person classes in the Philippine basic education: threading the opportunities and limitations in the teaching of Physical Education

Two years after face-to-face classes were suspended in the Philippines due to the threat of COVID-19, the Department of Education is implementing the progressive expansion of limited in-person learning. More schools are expected to hold limited face- to-face classes as the government revises its School Safety Assessment Tool, which has streamlined the requirements for the conduct of in-person class sessions. With the push to get education back into schools, it is essential to look into the opportunities and limita- tions in teaching Physical Education. Using a qualitative descriptive phenomenological research design, 34 Physical Education Teach- ers teaching in the Philippine Basic Education took part in several in-depth interviews. During the triangulation of results, seven important themes on teachers’ concerns came up: Students are demotivated to go to face-to-face classes, students are misbehaving and doing inappropriate learning actions, classroom settings need to be modified to follow standard health protocols, teaching strategies and learning activities need to be retrofitted, teachers' and students' performances are affected by the protective gear they have to wear all the time, and there is a worry that COVID may surge again. Based on these results, the government should look into these factors because these will have a significant effect on the implementation of face-to-face classes in the Philippines. The results of this study were used to come up with valuable conclusions and suggestions.

The Analysis Of The Online Physical Education Learning During The Pandemic In The Outmost Area

This study aims to identify how the online physical education learning process is during the pandemic. The design used is causal comparative (ex-post facto). The aim is to see how the learning activities and what media are used by Physical Education teachers. The instrument used was an online questionnaire with several questions, starting from the identity of the teacher, the media used, the obstacles experienced by teachers in online learning and the teacher's perceptions of online learning today. The sample used was elementary to high school physical education teachers. The results showed that the use of learning application media was obtained for elementary school physical education teachers who preferred more to use social media WhatsApp for teachers aged <40 years = 49%, junior high school teachers aged 24-40 years = 35.54% preferred more to use google classroom, while high school teachers who were dominated by teachers aged 24-40 years = 34% using 3 learning application media with a small difference, namely, google classroom, Whatsapp and manual. The dominant use of applications in each educational unit cannot be denied, apart from the age factor, other things, namely, the geographical location factor and the ability of the human resources of the physical education teachers themselves.

Students’ experiences in learning physical education in an online environment

The start of the Novel Corona Virus in 2019 has been the root cause of the severe disruption of economic opportunities and educational curriculum implementation affecting people's daily living across the world. In the field of education, the pandemic has brought changes to the educational system. A shift in the mode of learning has shifted from face-to-face to online and modular learning, wherein the former has been utilized more. This basic qualitative study was conducted to explore the experiences of students along with their recommendations to further improve the delivery of online physical education. Twenty informants from the different departments of the University of Saint Louis participated in this study through online interviews.
