A survey of potato growers in Bangladesh: production and challenges

The study was conducted in the 20 upazila of 10 selected major potato growing districts of Bangladesh to find out the present potato cultivation status, challenges, diversity of pests and their risks management options among the farmers. The data were collected through interview of 500 potato farmers considering 25 potato farmers from each upazila. Infections of diseases were reported to be the major problems followed by lower market price of the produced potato. Other major problems faced during potato cultivation were insect pest attack and weed attack. The BARI Alu-7 (Diamant) was most susceptible potato variety to insect pests and diseases, whereas the Lal-pakhri was the least susceptible to pests. Most of the fields (98.50%) were infested by cutworm. Among these pests, cutworm and aphid were identified as major pests and caused high and moderate infestations respectively. Socio-demographic Status of Potato Growers in Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh

Socio-demography of statuses reflects the demographic and social roles and achievements of an individual(s) in a population. The current profile of sociodemographic on potato growers is vital to know for sustaining of a major demandable vegetable, potato. The purpose of the present study was to determine the status of sociodemography in Chapainawabganj district. Using a random sample procedure, a total of 40 respondents were selected on six socio-demographic characteristics like as, age, level of education, experience level, farm size, family size and annual income. Data were collected from five upazilas in Chapainawabganj district (Bholahat, Gomostapur, Nachol, Shibganj and Chapainawabganj sadar) using a pre-structured interview schedule. Middle aged (36 to 50 years) potato farmers having primary education and 11 to 25 years' experience in potato farming. They have medium sized farm (1.1 to 3 ha) living in a medium sized family (5 to 7 persons) and medium annual income (32 to 302 thousand Taka). Form the above indication, it was clarified that the features of sociodemography was not a mark to sustain potato farming system.
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in Bangladesh has arisen fast due to economic liberalization coupled with growing urbanization, expanding market options. The potato is considered to be a potential crop to face the challenge of 21 st century. It can serve the food security of the ever growing population, creation of job opportunities and developing agro-based and agro-processing industries in the country for sustainable economic growth. Bangladesh achieved a remarkable success in potato production to take it to 7 th rank in the world map. Potato production is increasing day by day both vertically and horizontally. In 2014, total production was 8.6 million tons and the consumption capacity was 6.5 million tons, rest 2.1 million tons was surplus. So need to export potato to foreign countries. But the major constraints for this is non-availability of sufficient suitable varieties with high dry matter (>21%) and low reducing sugar content (<0.01%). Identification of cropping zones, technology packages for production of export quality varieties, non-availability of resistant varieties for bacterial wilt and technologies for long period storage are other limitations in developing export sectors in the country. To meet the instant need of the processing varieties, the variety introduction procedure may be liberalized under a crush programme to ensure quick inflow of processing varieties in the country. Export of potatoes is an important avenue to expand utilization of potatoes grown in the country.
Economic Evaluation of Production Costs and Returns of Potato Crop in Sylhet Region of Bangladesh

An Analysis of Marketable Surplus of Potato in Bangladesh

Present study examines the marketable surplus of potato. Cobb-Douglas type functional form has been tried in this study. Results of the study indicate that, marketable surplus of potato is around 82 per cent and 22 per cent is sold at the time of harvest. Regression coefficient of total production of potato confirms that total production is the best predictor in determining the level of marketable surplus. The elasticity of sale with respect to total production is more than unity. Therefore, increasing potato production in Bangladesh increases the marketed surplus. This can be achieved with the potato yield. Therefore, emphasis should be given on increasing yield through use of improved technology (irrigation, feniliser) and hybrid seed with short maturation period.

The study was carried out in two intensive potato growing areas (Rangpur and Munshigonj) to estimate the technical efficiency of potato producers and to describe the level of variation in potato productivity due to differences in input use. Data were collected from 60 farmers (30 farmers from each district) using simple random sampling technique. Average technical efficiency was 86% implying that on average 14% inefficiency remained at producersÂ’ level. The application of human labour, MoP, and weedicides would increase potato yield significantly. On the other hand, the coefficient of urea and pesticide cost was found negative and significant which advarsely effect the yield of potato. Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is grown worldwide in more than 150 countries of the world as staple food including Nepal. It is important food crops for food security and fourth most important staple food in Nepal. It contributes 2.17 in Gross Domestic Products and 6.57 in Agriculture Gross Domestic Products. Potato Glut in Bangladesh: Forecasting Potato Production and Marketing implications for future
In recent years, Bangladesh observes huge surplus in potato production and due to lack in storage capacity, most of the potatoes are wasted. Besides, the export market is not in favorable condition for the potato market in Bangladesh. Hence, the surplus of potatoes has become a tale of owe. Therefore, the aim of the study is to forecast the potato production by the year 2029-30 and analyze market system, storage and the export of those potatoes. However, the major findings are: Firstly, by the end of the year 2030, the production of potato will raise more than 300 lac metric tons and definitely, there will be huge surplus of potatoes as is in current time. Secondly, we should take necessary steps to (i) facilitate accredited lab facilities to promote disease free potato export and (ii) set up a separate agricultural processing zone in Chittagong to expedite export facilities. Thirdly, under public private partnership (ppp) more cold storages need to be established with higher capacities and lastly, alternative crop like maize can be popularized in place of potatoes among farmers.
