Arthur Ransome and Dmitri Mitrokhin: Translating the Russian Folktale
This paper focuses on Arthur Ransome' s and Dmitri Mitrokhin' s collaboration in translating the Russian folktales. Old Peter's Russian Tales (1916), Ransome' s first serious (and sustained) success was the translation product of his early sojourns in Russia. Close readings of this work, as well as of the translator's correspondence and other papers pertaining to his microhistory are used to explore the interplay of the translated text and the picture against the background of personal, as well as wider, British-Russian interaction at the turn of the twentieth century. Ransome' s book of over three hundred pages is illustrated with Mitrokhin' s seven whole-page coloured pictures and twenty nine black and white head-pieces and end-pieces, which the author found admirable and his publishers were pleased with (later editions will be illustrated by other artists as well), thus contributing to the success of their joint venture. The atmosphere of a joyous meeting with the reader created by the bright coloured and decorative dust jacket is maintained by the coloured pictures, the emotionally powerful renderings of the beauty, magic, and elaborate style of the Russian tales; the vignettes relating to the spatial aspect and the peasant background contribute to their rustic poetics. While Ransome's translation strategy in retelling the Russian tales to his young reader at home was largely domesticating, he was careful in conveying their culturally particular character, which was enhanced by Mitrokhin's effort to educate the foreign reader in the ways of the Russian peasant world and story. Imbued with a nostalgic appeal of the Russian Silver age, his pictures add to the bright colours and charm of the book, while the friendship and cooperation of the translator and artist are illustrative of the British-Russian enchantment at the turn of the twentieth century. The philosophy of Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak Ha-Cohen Kook directs towards the unity of all thought and ascribes divine meaning to every part of the universe in its totality. This study will present the meaning of Eros and male sexuality in R. Kook’s philosophy, emphasizing the integration of personality motivated by erotic desire. R. Kook described the individual’s impulse as being derived from the great flow of the river of life that streams at the heart of humanity. By adopting psychological insights into culture and sexuality, R. Kook changes the religious status of Eros from a force to be reined in to one that can fuel spiritual renovation.
Betel, ‘Lonely Heroes’ and Magic Birth in the Philippines and Beyond: Comparative Mythology, Field Work and Folklore Corpora , 2014
The ‘lonely/low hero’ is a personage depicted initially as a pitiful, isolated, friendless, sad orphan or foundling, but who appears to prove himself to be a powerful representative of a high-ranking family as the story unwinds. We find those personages in different genres: ritual myths, epics, charms, curses and tales. Betel chewing as a cultural practice is of great importance in the depiction of key mythological figures, lonely heroes in particular. The paper analyses the symbolism of betel chewing as compared to other chewing practices worldwide. Philippine folklore texts are being analysed to define motifs connected to the image of a lonely hero in the folklore of the Tinguian (Itneg), Kalinga, Yattuka (Kallahan), Ifugao and other highlanders of the Northern Philippines, and compares them to corresponding themes in Philippine non-Cordilleran mythologies and beyond. Between Lévinas and Arendt – Philosophical Origins of Alain Finkielkraut’s Reflection on the Other and the Education, współautor: K.Liszka, „Journal of Education Culture and Society” 2014, no. 2, s. 19-30 A member of the generation of student revolt ’68, Alain Finkielkraut is thought to be one of the most prominent intellectuals in France, taking part in public debates on several issues essential for Europe and the world. His assays, articles and books may be read as a complex commentary with a sound humanistic background to the condition of western culture as well as to current socio-political events. Our article focuses on revealing theoretical grounding of Finkielkraut’s reflection in the philosophies of Emmanuel Lévinas and Hannah Arendt. We attempt to reconstruct the way Finkielkraut employs his critical apparatus built on their thought to the field of educational practices in order to present the specific perspective of educational research and to contribute to the knowledge produced by widely understood critical pedagogic.
