One hundred and eighty four students returned the complete self constructed questionnaire, which has been analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and Pearson Correlation. The result showed the distance learners indicated low level of sense of belonging. ‘Membership’ was found to be the most dominant aspect of sense of belonging as compared to other aspects. The middle-aged students showed the highest sense of belonging compared to other age group. The sense of belongings also was found different between genders. However, sense of belongings did not show any significant correlation with the students’ academic achievement. The Students’ program of studies also did not show any differences in the sense of belonging among students.
Distance Educational Relationship and Senses of Belonging: The voices of students
Digital Education Review
In a viral society in which the social being claims the ability to maintain distance and the socially desirable representation of the body, in particular the face, claims its concealment, the distance educational relationship represents a critical area that deserves to be highlighted in the research agendas. This study aims to explore the sense of belonging of 144 students who attend a distance learning university. For this purpose, an open-ended questionnaire was applied, previously disclosed in closed groups on social networks. The students' sense of belonging was analysed through the types of connections they maintain with the campus, course, peers and teachers. The analysis of the narratives expresses a great diversity, density of experiences and expectations in the connections and senses of belonging. Attributing great importance to teachers in the appropriation of knowledge, it is essentially with their peers - other students - that the connections and sense of belonging a...
University Belongingness Scale: Measurement and Construct Verification in Indonesian Language
International Journal of Evaluation and Research in Education (IJERE), 2012
Sense of belonging is the extent to which person feels attached, related and belong in organization system. If, a person feels accepted, comfortable, congruence and get recognition from an organization, this condition will motivate the person to share positive contribution to their organization. The problem with Ahmad Dahlan University is a low student sense of belonging to their university. This condition will cause negative effects for university in the future, with increasing several students' negative behaviors such as apathy, unresponsiveness, until higher students drop out. It is needed to evaluate and understand the student's sense of belongings to their university, in order to take preventive action related to a low sense of belongings of students. The aim of this study is to create and develop a sense of belongingness measurement for Ahmad Dahlan University Belongingness Scale (ADUBS), that it will be used to evaluate how high the student sense of belonging to their university. The result of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed two dimensions the sense of belongingness constructs that represent the sense of belongings of student to their university namely University belongings and Community belongings. The next result from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using structural equation modeling (SEM) confirms that measurement model of ADUBs was fitted with empirical data (Chisquare = 39.054, with p > .001, degree of freedom = 36, CMIN = 1.085, RMSEA =. 022, NFI = .918, TLI = .989, GFI= .961, and CFI= .993.
An Exploration Into the Importance of a Sense of Belonging for Online Learners
The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning
Fostering a sense of belonging and a personal connection is seen as fundamental by many educational researchers, regardless of the learning environment. Online learning certainly provides flexible learning opportunities but comes with notable issues. For online learners, nurturing a sense of belonging may present a way of improving their experiences and attainment, as well as reducing attrition rates. Research specifically exploring sense of belonging and online learning is limited. This article addresses that gap and reports on a small-scale exploratory study using qualitative data-collection and analysis methods to investigate the importance, or not, of sense of belonging for postgraduates’ online education by exploring the origins and nature of their lived experience of online learning and their sense of belonging therein. Our initial findings emphasise its importance for them as online learners and have identified three significant themes: interaction/engagement, the culture of ...
Student perceptions of belonging at university: a qualitative perspective
New Directions in the Teaching of Physical Sciences, 2019
Belonging is multidimensional, personal and geographical in nature. Establishing a sense of belonging benefits students and institutions. This study sought to explore aspects of belonging from the student perspective. Data were collected using open text boxes within a questionnaire and an optional focus group. A total of 617 students participated of whom 85% completed the questionnaire. One focus group with 3 participants was held. Qualitative data highlighted personal and social aspects of belonging, and the benefits of belonging for successful study. The importance of belonging was not agreed universally but most students identified it as important, and felt that they personally belonged. Understanding what belonging means and what influences it is important to enhance student engagement and retention.
Sense of University Belonging- a case study of Al-Quds University Students
Asian Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities, 2017
The main purpose of the current study was to investigate sense of belonging (SOB) of Al-Quds University students. Index of a 25-item scale was used to measure SOB which was developed by the researchers, based on the SOC model (McMillan & Chavis, 1986), and was administrated to three hundred and sixty-nine students (173 males and 196 females) full-time undergraduate students at Al-Quds University stratifiedly selected. The findings demonstrate that the students of Al-Quds University indicated a moderate level of SOB to their university. Differences were found between gender, place of residency, and academic year; however, SOB has emerged as a significant predictor of students' academic achievement. Implications of the findings of this study, and directions for future empirical research were briefly discussed. Sense of belonging is an important topic in higher education. However, few studies have examined this important construct at the course level and in the online learning context; even fewer are quantitative by design. The aim of our study was to develop and evaluate a measure of sense of belonging that could be used across different postsecondary learning contexts. A psychometric investigation was conducted at a large, US southeastern university on data using the newly developed Brief Course Belonging Scale (BCBS). Results provide evidence for the unidimensional treatment of BCBS data across delivery context, convergent validity for BCBS scores as they relate positively to belonging at the university level, connectedness, and academic motivation, and discriminant validity for BCBS scores as they related minimally with loneliness. Differential item functioning was detected on one item, but this did not jeopardize score validity and reliability. Specific psychometric implications regar...
The Belonging to the University Scale
Acta Didactica Napocensia
The aim of the study is to develop a belonging to the university scale (BUS) in order to determine the level of fulfillment of the need to belong among university students at the higher education institutions they attend. The population of the investigation includes university students studying at the campus of Ordu University. A 5 point Likert-type scale was created in the study. The SPSS 15 and LISREL-8.15 programs were used in the statistical analysis performed during development of the scale. Content validity and construct validity techniques were used for validity analysis. The internal consistency checks of belonging to the university scale were completed. The research data is given as mean and percent, and t-test and one-way variance analysis were conducted in order to determine the differences between the groups and the values of belonging to the university. The internal consistency Cronbach α reliability coefficient values of the scale and the test-retest reliability of the test results were satisfactory. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed for the construct validity of the scale and three dimensions (Motivation, Expectations and Identification) were identified. The level of belonging of university students to the university they attend was examined with the scale with the validity and reliability tested and suggestions are presented in accordance with the obtained results.
Developing an instrument to measure social presence in distance higher education
British Journal of Educational Technology, 2010
This paper examines the construct of social presence and develops an instrument to measure social presence in distance higher education. Social presence is regarded as an important factor to understand psychological and emotional relations among distant learners, especially when constructivism and discourse based learning are emphasised. Items initially drawn from the literature were reviewed by experts in relevant fields and extracted through exploratory and confirmatory analyses. Then correlation analysis was executed to see the relationship between social presence and other learning variables. As a result, this study confirmed four factor constructs of social presence: mutual attention and support, affective connectedness, sense of community and open communication, and also generated and verified a social presence instrument with a total of 19 items.
A Sense of Belonging in a University Community: A Study of Undergraduate Students
International Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, 2014
A good learning environment requires, among other things, a healthy and vibrant community in which all members feel they belong, can address all their social, spiritual and learning needs and can also feel proud about and own it. The purpose of the study was to investigate the extent to which students felt they belonged to the university and also determine the utility of the sense of community index instrument in this population. The original 12-item sense of community index developed by Perkins, Florin, Rich, Wandersman & Chavis was used. The results indicated: 1) a low sense of belonging, 2) a weak internal consistency of the scale r = .63 and 3) a two-factor structure. The findings are discussed in relation to the students' perception of what their involvement in university administration should be, the nature of the scale itself and the sample in general. A major limitation is that only a small set of students from one department was involved and therefore caution should be exercised in its interpretation and generalisation. A need for future work is delineated.
