Smart Grid Pilot Project Evaluation and Recommendations in Indonesia: Case Study of Semau Island

The Indonesian national electric company (PT. PLN) has aimed to increase the level of electrification to provide a better life for citizens. However, the dispersion of citizens in remote islands challenges the electrification infrastructure and services. Nevertheless, some strategies have been implemented to pass the challenges, including the adoption of the emerging technology smart grid. The smart grid is adopted to solve specific problems of electrical power services for small remote islands with limited energy resources. Although various problems challenge development, smart grid development should follow its comprehensive aims. Therefore, an assessment method is needed to evaluate the smart grid to expose the advantages and disadvantages of the existing design. Furthermore, based on the evaluation results, recommendations can be delivered to increase the performance of the smart grid. Furthermore, the evaluation and recommendations can be used to improve the design of the next smart grid project. Finally, a smart grid on the remote island of Semau is used for a case study.

Conceptualizing Indonesia’s ICT-based Energy Security Tracking System with Detailed Indicators from Smart City Extension

The purpose of this study is to conceptualize Indonesia’s ICT-based energy security tracking system with detailed indicators of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) from the smart city extension. The opportunities for improvement to the energy security system is still wide open with the support of advances in information and communication technology (ICT) to integrate the internet and smart grid. The method refers to five main dimensions: availability, efficiency, affordability, sustainability, and governance. Indicators to Measure a Smart Energy: An Indonesian Perspective

Facing the big number of urban population, the city should implement smart city concept that can help urban citizen to improve their quality of life. A component of a smart city is smart energy. Implementing smart energy concept especially in Indonesia is important due to the urbanization rate is over the average of urbanisation in South Eastern Asia and Asia. This paper is a working paper discuss the variables and indicators of a smart energy coming from existing literatures, ideas from 21 respondents who are business players, experts, and customers' of smart energy in Indonesia. This study finds that there are eight variables and 24 indicators to measure if a energy services has implemented a smart energy concept.

Worldwide Technological Revolutions and Its Challenges under Smart Grid Paradigm: A Comprehensive Study

Smart Grid (SG) is one of the biggest challenge at plantery level that grab the attention of whole world.It is an umbrella term used for a set of technologies that are being developed as a substitution to old conventional power grid in context of future requirments. However, there exist differ-ences in understanding and implementing the concept of smart grid in different countries. Power grid enterprises and organizations comprehend the concept of smart grid variously under different development environment and political requirement. Until now, there is no clear agreement worldwide on the smart grid related technologies. With a growing demand for sustainable electricity, the need for such a grid is vital that works more efficient, reliable with affordable maintenance, able to accommodate more renewable energy sources. Based on a vast amount of relevant documents on smart grid, the aim of this paper is to highlight the importance and needs of SG by providing an overview of the essentials of a progressive smart grid paradigm with different concepts in context with old grid. The key focus is on to shed some light for better understanding the concept and characteristics of SG accord-ing to different countries’s vision. Additionally, future foreseeable challenges/issues in designing of SG are also categorized and addressed in this article.

Smart grid can overcome existing and future challenges in a cost effective manner. In this paper, the main focus is on the smart grid infrastructure, its capabilities, communication scenarios, technologies and energy management. The implementation of the vision of modernized intelligent smart grid can overcome problems and challenges of traditional electricity grids and utilities. The paper also focuses on the services and factors that attract the consumers and utilities to change the way they operate in order to improve the current services. Various measures are proposed to help in implementation and adoption of smart grid vision in Pakistan. Finally, paper presents smart grid research programs, deployments, issues and concerns.
