Themes and Issues of the Sociology of the Military

Handbook of the sociology of the military, 2006

This handbook, compiled with the collaboration of many of the leading scholars of the sociology of the military, from different countries and continents, and representative of different currents of thought, ends up being a picture of the state of the art of the discipline at the start of the new millennium. Beyond being a manual for consultation and study for those who pursue this disciplineor are setting out on that road -the book constitutes a kind of summa of sociological thought on the military as it presents itself in the year 2002.

Sociology of the Military

Springer eBooks, 2022

Military sociology, or more precisely, the sociology of military organizations, studies social facts about military institutions, their functional and structural components, and their relations with the societies that constitute their environments. Three periods can be roughly distinguished in the historical development of military sociology: the origins of the discipline, the Cold War period, and the current one. Like other subfields of sociology, the themes discussed in military sociology reflect the evolution of society at large. This particular branch of sociology bridges individual behaviors with broader social structures, in this case, military organizations.

Sociology, the Military and Civil-Military Relations: an under-explored field

This paper outlines and reviews the field of sociology and the military in Australia. It argues that sociology and the military have an impoverished relationship in Australia. A brief history of the field is outlined. Key events are described to outline the importance of building the relationship between sociology and the military. The idea of military criminology is floated to describe the richness of a research field that describes and explains institutional behaviour that results in criminality or misconduct.

Armed Forces and Society - FLACSO/IPSA

This paper is not only about the developing of civilian-militaries capabilities in processes around state-building -but also it is. This study is focused on the research development under the state policies guided through the institutions connected to Science, Education and Armed Forces.

Dynamic Intersection of Military and Society

Handbook of Military Sciences, 2020

The military and society interact and shape each other every day. This chapter examines the diverse, interdisciplinary field of study that seeks to understand and explain that interaction. It begins by defining and situating the field’s origin story in military sociology and political science. Key scholars and events are highlighted to show how the field evolved as the world moved from the Cold War to the War on Terror and beyond. During that time the scope of the field grew incorporating scholars from around the world and across an array of disciplines. The chapter then narrows to discuss key topics central to the field – civil military relations, public opinion/popular culture, recruitment and retention, minority representation (women, minorities, LGBTQ), military families, and veterans’ studies. The chapter ends with a discussion and examples of the methods scholars use to study established and emerging research questions.

A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF CIVIL-MILITARY ISSUES WRITTEN BY EUROPEAN AUTHORS FOR THE JOURNAL ARMED FORCES & SOCIETY

This applied research project (ARP) describes civil-military issues written by European authors in the journal Armed Forces & Society. The journal Armed Forces & Society is an international interdisciplinary journal. Since September 11, 2001 and the Paris attacks of 2015, Europe and its militaries have been more engaged in warfare and peacekeeping missions. As a result, it is important and timely to examine the current discussion around European military studies written by scholars. A description of the content in Armed Forces & Society journal provides insight to this question. This study organizes civil-military issues using a classification system developed by the European Research Group on Military and Science (ERGOMAS). The organization is an international academic association that created working groups to deal with issues between the military and society. Each working group studies a particular topic. This study created categories based on these working groups to describe the content by European authors in Armed Forces & Society since 2011. Content analysis is performed using four topics: 1) recruitment and retention, 2) military families, 3) gender and the military, and 4) veterans and society). Armed Forces & Society articles published between 2011 and 2015 (N=38) were used in the analysis. The findings reveal little discussion among European authors on the four topics. Among these four topics, the most frequently discussed were military families and recruitment and retention. Overall the topics are underdeveloped and as such, require more discussion. Recommendations are made to enhance future contributions to the Armed Forces & Society journal.

Social Research and the Military

Handbook of the sociology of the military, 2006

The reason why this research is presented in a handbook is to let the reader know who carries out research in the sociology of the military and in what conditions. As the reader can see from the pages that follow, there are common traits that characterise this research in the various countries as well as distinguishing ones: together, thanks to the good number of countries represented in the research, they provide a useful world overview on the subject.

The Relationship Between the Armed Forces and Civil Society / State

The relationship between the Society and the Armed Forces is two-way path. The military never strictly delimited at any time around the world, which would fit them from the perspective of classical professionalism, but in contrast, military action has always been influenced by culture and national character , for the inspiration received from the people, State, institutions and various corporate organizations. In short: the Armed Forces have indeed contributed to define the directions of history, culture and nature beyond the limits of their classical purpose. This contribution, with its qualities and its shortcomings, results not only from military training and psychology but also of the influence exerted on the military by the Society, conditioned by their aspirations, customs, values, satisfactions, anxieties, frustrations, beliefs and living conditions. This two-way path has centuries and it is a worldwide phenomenon, influenced and adjusted by geopolitical, physiographic, economic, technological, social, cultural and other particularities. As examples: Britain's economy, national psychology, and island situation led it to build its excellent navy and a good expeditionary army which, in turn, supported and stimulated British liberal and imperial mercantilist policy in the world. The French army of the Revolution and Napoleon, reflected the revolutionary outburst of the petty-bourgeois proletarian spirit of France at the time, along with their external deeds, were a strong supporter of internal revolutionary and authoritarian policies.
