Collaborative categorization on the web: Approach, prototype, and experience report

2003

Abstract Collaborative categorization is an emerging direction for research and innovative applications. Arguably, collaborative categorization on the Web is an especially promising emerging form of collaborative Web systems because of both, the widespread use of the conventional Web and the emergence of the Semantic Web providing with more semantic information on Web data.

Classifications of Collaborative Search

2010

ABSTRACT We present a set of three collaborative styles that were reported by participants in an interview study we conducted in the summer of 2009 to investigate exploratory and collaborative search behaviors. We give examples of each style from our data and comment on how the styles relate to existing classification schemes and models. We highlight the nature of tight versus loose coupling and how styles may vary based on task, expertise, and the relationship of the collaborators.

Collaborative Knowledge Creation and Management in Information Retrieval

Computing Research Repository, 2010

The final goal of Information Retrieval (IR) is knowledge production. However, it has been argued that knowledge production is not an individual effort but a collaborative effort. Collaboration in information retrieval is geared towards knowledge sharing and creation of new knowledge by users. This paper discusses Collaborative Information Retrieval (CIR) and how it culminates to knowledge creation. It explains how created knowledge is organized and structured. It describes a functional architecture for the development of a CIR prototype called MECOCIR. Some of the features of the prototype are presented as well as how they facilitate collaborative knowledge exploitation. Knowledge creation is explained through the knowledge conversion/transformation processes proposed by Nonaka and CIR activities that facilitate these processes are high-lighted and discussed

Collaborative Aspects of Information Retrieval Tools

Abstract Information retrieval (IR) tools are engaged to find information in electronic form, in databases, digital libraries, and networks. However, the advent of the web technology has boosted the amount of information available to us way beyond our cognitive capacity. The importance of good IR tools has thus increased and the tools have become natural focal points for organisational information seeking. This situation offers a possibility to exploit the collaborative efforts of the individual users. However, is the opportunity utilised?

A communication model for knowledge sharing in collaborative information retrieval

2008

Knowledge sharing has become a household name in many organizations and communities. Our concern is on how to facilitate knowledge sharing in Collaborative Information Retrieval (CIR). In CIR, there exist various types of knowledge that can be shared among users. In this paper we highlighted these knowledge and the CIR activities in which they can be shared. To facilitate the sharing, we propose two approaches: formative and interactive approaches to knowledge sharing and we developed a communication model for knowledge exchange in CIR
