The famous sexual encounter of an Amazon, commonly named Thalestris, with Alexander the Great, has passed from Classical sources of the Macedonian emperor´s life through Medieval Latin recreations such as the Libro de Alexandre. In this paper I will study the presence of this episode in the following sources: Arrian, Plutarch, Strabo and Diodorus in Greek, and Curtius, Justin and Paulus Orosius in Latin. I will also comment on its absence in the famous Romance of Alexander the Great by Pseudo-Callisthenes, examining two Latin translations, by Julius Valerius and the Archpriest Leo of Naples. Furthermore, this paper will study the credibility of the episode and the existence of Amazons, and its staying power through the centuries, especially in the Middle Ages, in when the story held great importance first in Latin literature and later in romance.

Palabras clave-Platón, σχολή, Estado PLATO'S ΣΧΟΛΗ This is a discussion of a term (σχολή) that Plato uses in relation not only to the opposition between body and soul but also to the political activity of city life. While Euripides and Xenophon use the term simply to describe the quiet con-templative life as opposed to the anxieties and tensions of city life, Plato uses it in a more complex sense. In fact if we are to understand fully Plato's Dialogues then the dichotomy (σχολή / ἀσχολία) has to be read in this complex way. Socrates' ironic words at the beginning of the Phaedrus suggest that the two terms are synonymous. In the Laws σχολή refers to the proper role of citizens in both their pursuit of public well-being and their interpretation of the laws. Thus leisure is the most important characteristic of the ideal life of the state and is an absolutely necessary feature for the generation of the 'good life' itself.
A fake inscription forged in the early 16th century mentions the existence "in ripis Tagi" of a temple dedicated to the Great Mother "sub nomine magnae Pasitheae" (CIL II 97*). As its falsehood was already detected in the early 17th century, there has never been a satisfactory explanation of the reason which led the forger to use Pasithea (according to Homer, one of the Graces, and to Hesiod, a Nereid) as an appellation of the Magna Mater. A revision of the epigraphic sources is provided and, by using the philological instruments (early editions, humanistic commentaries, etc.) available to the author of the forgery, the origin of the confusion between Pasithea and Cybele is identified. This can be traced to Catullus’ poem 63, the corrupt state of which made the text very difficult to understand, and favoured a series of mistakes and inexact interpretations, whose last consequence was the Spanish fake inscription.

From the Hellenistic period, festivals called Katagogia, Katagogé or Katagogio are celebrated in honor of Aphrodite, Kore and Dionysos in different areas of the Greek world. In the present work the denominations of the festivals are collected, the values of the verb κατάγω are analyzed and an overview of the different celebrations is presented. The objective is to analyze whether they have common aspects which justify the use of the same lexeme for celebrations of disparate cults.
