Indicators of Anthropogenic Change and Biological Risk in Coastal Aquatic Environments (original) (raw)
Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science, 2011
Abstract
A suite of indicators covering biological, chemical, and physical realms is required for effective management and to ensure sustainability of highly sensitive regional assets in the coastal environment. Indicators need to be easily and inexpensively measured, be free of anthropogenic temporal and spatial influence, and have low natural variance. Sediment chemistry provides the pristine condition, the magnitude of anthropogenic change, and the risk of biological stress due to contaminants in the ecosystem. This chapter describes techniques used in the unambiguous assessment of these parameters and provides examples to demonstrate approaches.
